PMMA contact lenses

Postby Aaron Baker » Wed 18 May 2005 5:39 pm

I went to the hospital today for a fitting of sceral lens in my right eye-having already been fitted for one in my left. However, after an hour of trying to fit a scleral lens and trying to get the eyesight corrected so that I could read the eye chart, this was unsuccessful, as I could barely read the first and second lines-let alone the rest! I now have to go back next week for the first stage of a PMMA lens fitting. I have been told that this is the last option available to me before being referred for a corneal graft. Does anyone have any recent experience of this type of lens and how successful has it been for you? I would find this extrememly beneficial as I am terrified of having surgery and becoming blind.

Hello Mate

Sorry to hear of the delay in getting the lens....guess we have all been in that situ at some stage or another

It seems that your Lens Fitters next approach is get get a more bespoke lens fitting from an impression from the eye....but than I could be wrong.

They will more than likely use the PMMA Lens for diagnstic/impression and then create the scleral from that..depending on what bespoke properties they need in the lens.......

Which other lenses have you tried?....Do you have good vision from the other eye?.....I can understand your concerns but rest assured the road to being blind is a distant one....but I can understand why you have thought that

Aaron,

One step at a time, I have no experience of scleral lenses, but have two corneal grafts, one in each eye.

Graft is pretty much considerd last resort and honestly it is not as scarry as it sounds.

Someone here will probably have expeience of PMMA lens. I think the suggestion on another thread to always have a friend in the consultation wth you is good so they just make the notes. Then from that you go and make the list of questions for next time.

Wish you all the best.

Gareth
