First time getting contacts. Had to wait two weeks for them to be made and had a lesson on putting them in on sat. Went ok except when i was having coffee with a mate (i hour later) the right one fell onto table so i went to bathroom and removed the left and placed in holder with cleaning solution.
Today i put them in but being new to them, was unsure if they were in correct, the right one got jammed and had a job to remove it but it came out, when i was inserting again after cleaning and giving a little pinch to remove excess fluid as advised, the lens cracked down the centre.
Has this happened to anyone else. Will my optician charge me for a replacement. i think it must have been faulty.
Very worried and afraid ir will happen again
Did anyone else find it hard putting them in when they first tried contacts.

Sorry to hear about that!....sounds a little odd that they cracked so easily.......
I had problems initially when i started using the normal corneal RGPS and took me about a month to get used to them
I do not know if the optician will charge however,....on a damaged one in the past mine hasnt....but ive never had it crack in half like yours.....mine was chipped from the side.......but give them a buzz.....

It is strange putting them in the eye. Mine aer really small. it is hard to tell if ther are correctly in. It was great leaving Opticians being able to see.
How did your lens chip. I am new to whole contacts thing and found this morn when i removed from case, that ehen i put in palm before inserting, there was a lot of the residu off cleaning solution. Optician told me to pinch to remove. Do you do this.
LOL about why they call you JAY.

Hi
Not sure how it chipped...if memory serves me right it fell from the window sill onto the wooden floor...so i had to go looking for it....and as i went to get it off the ground it chipped.
You shouldnt have residue?....Do you clean them and then rinse them with saline and then apply conditioning solution prior to inserting them?
I am a sucker for putting this b*****ds in.....as I cant actually keep my eye open with the lens goes in thus have NEVER been able to put the lenses onto my eye direct in 9 years lol....so my method is to put them in under the lower lid and then using my finger over the lower lid I guide it over the eye as I look around......its THE most wierd technique so Ive been told.....but it works and I love it.

I use a similar method to Jay to put my lenses in and int he past when they have chipped, it has been a result of dropping them and landing on the edge first.
I have a towel over the sink and area I put my lenses in so if I drop it, it land son a clean towel and does not chip. My lenses are blue so I can tell when they are in the right place even with an eye full of tears as the whites of my eyes are white and not blue. Although without lenses I can not tell the size of my lenses they are different shades of blue so I know which is for what eye!
It might also be possible to claim under your house insurance for a lost/broken lens. I have asked my home insurer to cover them which is cheaper than taking out a special policy which some opticians make available on request.

I seemed to be the expert at losing/breaking lenses.Lost count of the number I have lost through drunken nights out or in dusty environments!
However as my right eye steadily deteriorated I was getting new lenses as my prescription changed!
Probably not the best way..........
Persevere!!
Kind Regards

Thanks everyone
Opticain was on day off and his bithchy receptionist was like it is your fault, there might be a charge.
I have tyo admit(do not tell anyone), they did fall a few times son the carpet when i was inserting them. but i do not think the left one has chipped. She told me to keep that one. Does it chip at edge or where else in lens.
I use Boston simplus . All in one solution.

Just a quick note to say thanks to everyone for help and advice. it really helped. Feeling a little better now.
The lens is on order. takes 4-5 working days so i asked for another lesson when it arrives.I was told to keep the left one. Will they just order me a new right one or will i get a new right and left lens. I am a little worried that if the one which broke was a faulty one, then the left may be the same.
Thanks
P.S. Great to talk to people who understand KC.

No, usually they just replace what breaks or gets lost.
Like most I too have broken or lost my lenses on many occassions for various reasons; over 10yrs ago while doing my driving test had to stop during a 3point turn, I blinked and it popped out, on an airplane even in LA where passers-by stopped and helped me look for it, and I've broken my lenses while cleaning , they snapped between my fingers. The clinic showed me how to clean the lenses by using thumb and forefinger but after breaking 2 lenses that way I switched to using the palm of my hand and my little finger, which works much better and it seems to get cleaner that way too.
To be honest I never heard of 'pinching' lenses before, with the RGP lenses being so rigid a small amount of pressure makes them snap easy, the worst time was when I forgot myself and rubbed my eye, the damn thing snapped under my eyelid, ouch it took the scratch to my eye about 3wks to heal good enough before I could tolerate the new one.
But I'm sure with more practice you'll be fine.
God luck with the new lens

Makes me feel better knowing that i am not alone. I am nervous now about getting the new one and starting all over again. As i had only one day of inserting the lens.
Did you have to pay for new ones each time they broke and if so was it expensive.
I am going to ask the optician's assistant to go over the cleaning again.
Did it take you long to get use to the lenses.
Being new to the contacts, i am afraid to clink or touch eye or wondering what happens if i cry with them in. Stupid i know but it is a whole new world. One thing for sure, will not be wearing them on a wild night out. Have imagges of telling DJ to anoounce that everyone not move. LOL!
