slits being cut in cornea

Postby cherishu2 » Mon 05 Oct 2009 1:45 pm

Corneas graft was 2 years ago.
I had the stitches out last month.
My vision isnt what they wanted. That and a large stigmatism. So the consultant is taking me to theatre, under a local. To cuts slits in the front of the cornea. This will hopefully cause tissue to grow??????
I didnt ask questions cos id been waiting 4 hours to go in for app, so i was just fed up.
What is this procedure called? Anything else you know?
What will sight be like with slits in cornea????

This procedure was mentioned by the consultant who gave a talk about corneal transplants at our 2005 conference. It's called keratotomy and is used to reduce astigmatism after a transplant (he mentioned a figure of 1 in 10 transplants needing this, though I've only come across a few people who have had it). So the idea is that your vision will improve. The slits heal over, and the cornea becomes a more regular shape. That's my layman's understanding of it! Perhaps there are others here who can tell us more. All the best.

All the best with this. I know it is a disappointment when excellent vision is not delivered immediately by the surgery you have had.

Like Anne, I know only a few people (actually, I think it's 2) who have been through this sort of surgery, although you may be encouraged to learn that their experience has been positive.

Every good wish

Thinking of you hoping all goes ok, does sound a bit terrafying. If you are still feeling queezy about just having the proceedure under a local ask the anesthetist if there is no other options to make you more at ease.
