Hello all, Iregistered on here a while back, but its taken me some time for my first post!

I was diagnosed with KC four years ago, but have recently made the step to RPG lenses from soft lenses. I am currently using them in a "piggyback" formation as my eyes are rather sensitive to just the hard lens on its own. Whilst not finding them to be the most comfortable things in the world I have recently made the jump up to wearing them for about 12 hours a day, with the main incentive being I can actually see when using them! However, I am suffering problems after taking the lenses out at night. The only way I can describe it is that there feels like there is something stuck to my eyelid when I blink. I have not noticed my eyes becoming especially dry as the "cushion" lens are never plastered to my eye. I am due for my normal opticians appointment in about a months time and was wondering whether its worth waiting for that to ask about the problem, or if I need to get back in touch with the eye clinic at the Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield (where the RPG lenses have been fitted) about it.

Welcome to the forum!

It is because of experiences like the one you describe on removing your lens that many of us use artificial tears. My own preference is Clinitas Soothe, although there are several different brnds on the market, and each of us has to find the one best suited to our needs.

Meantime, there is no reason why you should not ask for an early appointment to see your eye care specialist to ask whether there are other measures you could take.

do you mean that it feels that there is a foreign body in your eye? If so, then do go back straight away as you may be suffering an abrasion.

Incidentally, if there is a problem with your piggy backing when you go back, there is always the option of staying with soft lenses as there are ones that are made for keratoconus and irregular cornea. If they say they are only for mild cases, tell them that this is no longer so! I regularly fit quite advanced KC with soft lenses!

Thanks for the replies. I think I will phone the eye clinic on Monday to ask for some further advice on what to do, as sometimes it feels worse than others after remiving the lenses, but I certainly feel at times like there is something that shouldn't be there stuck to my eyelids. I think I will try the artificial tears anyway as I feel they'll be a useful thing to have handy.

As for the hard lenses I certainly feel that my vision is a lot better than when I was using soft lenses, I honestly can't remember what type of soft lenses I was using though as to know if they were dedicated ones for KC. The main problem I have with soft lenses is they have a tendancy to rotate effecting my vision totally at random, which is certainly something that does not seem to happen with the RPGs.

Hi all,

Apologies about the very late reply, moved into a flat recently with no internet access then I totally forgot about coming back to update!

Following a trip to the eye clinic it appeared that the RGP lenses were a bit of a tight fit (massive air bubble in my left eye, optometrist was surprised it was not affecting my vision), the new ones seem better, with a review appointment in 6 months, or sooner if I feel they're not right. I've also adjusted how I remove the lenses from my eyes as well which appears to have helped with the soreness that was associated with their removal as well.
