Best eyedrops?

Postby Elvenmunky » Sun 09 Aug 2009 1:49 pm

My eyes get so dry throughout the day, breeze, AC, watching tv, playing xbox, going on the pc, even going outside and looking around gives me dry eyes! I was wondering which eye drops do you recommend to keep my eyes lubed for the whole day? Thanx

Unfortunatly there is no single solution that we can say will help you, just like lenses what works for one does not necessarily work for another.

You describe the things that makes your eyes feel dry but it would be woth discussing with you GP or optom to make sure there is no other reason for your eyes being dry. You need to make sure you are not hiding a problem. If it is just the contact lens wear breaking the tear film so what you describe helps the tears evaporate the it is down to lubricating eye drops but other things can help the drops work to. You make no mention of allergies which can cause dry eyes so see your GP to see if the dry eyes are allergy relate, you miht need anti histamines.

Make sure you are taking in plenty of water and stay hydrated, 2 litres per day is usualy recomended and this excludes dieretic drinks like tea, coffee, fizzy drinks, squash drinks. Water, proper fruit juices, organic smoothies, milk I find best and you might need to wear glasses either sun glasses or plane glasses just to reduce the breeze hitting your eyes.

I use Systane eye drops by Alcon and before I found them I tried many other drops, some of which others here found useful, but they did nothing for me. It took me about 3 months before I found an eye dro that worked and i've been on Systane for the past 3 years. Each eye drop type I used, I tried for at least a week and started using them every hour or two while I had lenses in. Eventually I found the Systane gave longer releif and as I continued using them found after a month or so I only needed them before putting lenses in and when I took my lenses out.

First thing in the morning I rnse my lenses with preservative free saline and put a drop of sytane in the back of the lens and then put the lens in my eye.

You mention computer use and X-box, these are easy to get carried away with and your blink rate does go down so eye drops aren't really going to help with that. you need to take a break of just a few minutes every 30 to 45 minutes when using these just to look round the room, adjust your focus and make your self blik a couple of times really hard.

Hope this helps.
Gareth

I use the Clinitas range: Soothe for normal use along with my lenses; hydrate at night so that my eyes are still nicely moist in the morning, and if I am about during the day without a lens, I use Clinits Ultra.

You can buy Clinitas online at http://www.dry-eyes.co.uk/acatalog/Clinitas.html

Another product that i have used in the past with some success is Optive, but I think you need a prescription for that.

sill on the hunt, visca tears offer short term relief but as last weeks doctor said tome 'we can slowly go through the BNF and then will find something you can tolerate.' the pharmacist is lookinginto aditive and preservative free for me as part my problem is in general i cant tolderate adicives n preservatives so thining the KC is no different!

Good luck keep us updated.

I'm afraid that Lea and Gareth are both right: it is going to be a matter of trial and error until you find a product that suits you!

It took me ages to find clinitas, and on the way I tried all sorts of other products. The key thing is not to panic; even if the last five things you have tried don't suit you, there is always going to be another product on the market, and it may be the one.

At least artificial tears are not very expensive.

I hope that you wont mind if I alert your members to the Lumecare website

It has been set up by specialists in dry eye medicines and intends to provide the best quality products, information and service at the lowest prices

Recent deregulation of dry eye treatments enables the highly effective rpoducts to be much more easily available without prescription or even pharmacist supervision

The internet allows this kind of efficiency so we have invested in clear video explanations from Ophthalmologist Teifi James, who invented the EyeBag (a warm compress mask for Blepharitis)

http://www.lumecare.co.uk

try it out and tell us what you think...we always include ideas for improvements to the information, service and even product range offered

at this time we have some special bonus offers, generally including a free sample of a useful additional product or 25% extra of the Clinitas Preservative Free Hyaluronate Mini Droppers which seem to be so popular with other members of this forum

best regards

Claire

Andrew I managed to get some Clinitas on rx, went and thought there is no harm in asking.
