I have had KC for nearly three years, (I am 23) I have had a few sets of contact lens but decided these were not for me as I found them uncomfortable. I now just get by with spectacles and extremely blurred vision.

I have recently started a new job, switching from a retail to an office environment and I know that I am going to encounter problems as using the PC will become more frequent. I have just been reading about INTACS and would like to know a few details from anyone who has them.

Where would be a good place to have the procedure done? I live in SW London but I am willing to travel

Is it expensive?

What is the recovery time like?

I think my mind is made up to have this done as I can not cope with the blurred vision and I definately do not want contact lens.

I think you may need to accept a few things.....You have KC, it MAY get worse....and you WILL need Contact Lenses.

Intacs have there place but the response and results are not that appealing that I have seen, both in UK and also in US

I think you need to do alittle more research and also explore Contact Lenses......as bear in mind even wth Intacs in..there are repurcussions on vision and cornea shape when the KC increases....

You may also wish to explore SOFT Lenses that have been mentioned in previous posts and even Scleral Lenses which are more comfortable

You may well want to try the soft lens option as they are comfortable and at least they are reversible in the fact if they are not working you can take them out. Any surgical technique can cause problems which may not be reversible.

If you explain what happened with contact lenses maybe we can all give you better advice!

i had 2 types of contacts the first ones were the gas permable and the 2nd im not to sure what they were but they were more wearable than the first.

The problem I had with both sets, apart from them being uncomfortable was the fact that they kept slipping out of place and falling out of my eye and for the type of work i was doing this was not very practical

Well that is the problem with RGP's sometimes. Both sclerals and soft lenses do not have this difficulty.

Do try contacts again before you go on to any surgical technique because this can keep you stable for quite a while.

Did you get your contacts through hospital or a private optician?

I had the problem you described with lenses falling out the first time I wore lenses nearly 20 years ago. As I have had to go to lenses again, the Rose K style of RGP's have overcome the problem. I had to have several fittings to find which were best as the chart the hospital has from the manufacture is just for KC, not for people like me with grafts and then KC pulling the graft out of shape! My local optician would not be able to cater for these due to the large number of lenses in the kit. The hospital came out with a ring binder full of samples and based on the topographical map of my cornea, the optician went with his best guess. Afetr four trial fittings (I was in the hospital fo most of the day) we found one that will not come out when I blink, but rapid left to right eye movement can displace it, but not so it falls out. The comfort is really good, I would personally say from experience go back to the hospital and see if the fit can be 'adjusted' slightly to help improve matters.

I got my contacts through the moorfields eye hospital

I am having Intacs installed at Centre for Sight at East grinstead hosiptal I have had a transplant in one eye and i need one in the eye they are plannig to place the Intac in, to try and negate the need for a transplant. I suggest you keep going back and telling them you cannot tolerate the lenses very well and ask about soft lenses. Moorfields do fit them, I know.
