Success Story Scleral Lenses

Postby charmers7 » Wed 02 Jan 2008 11:10 pm

Hi there I m new to this forum. Infact that s not true. I used to visit this forum rather frequently desperately seeking answers when I was wearing my RGps, and life was so miserable that I ended up as a prisoner in my own home. I couldnt see without the lenses, which were so painful to wear, and therefore I couldnt go out!

My life now has completely changed, and thought I should come back and tell you all my story. ...
I suffered from KC since I was 18. I m now 35. I was fitted RGPs and for many years I struggled with these and really persisted with them. They made my life a misery. I was constantly looking for them on the floor, in the basin, they were all over the place apart from my eyes where they were meant to be. Endless visits to top hospital in London to sort this out for me, but to no avail!! My only other option was a corneal transplant. this was offered to me by three different experts.

I didnt want to give in so decided to go for sclerals. Still top notch hospital and excellent referral center in London did not get these right! My life was at a complete halt by now.

My solution...I contacted Boston eye center in the US and because Im based in London they recommended top notch clinic in Amsterdam. I flew to this clinic, scleral lenses sent out to me within a week...Perfect Fit!!! This experience changed my life. I put these lenses on in the morning and honestly I can fall asleep with them because I would not relaise. Honestly thats how good they are.
and its not just the comfort , its my sharp vision too. I think I paid something likr 2500 euros for both lenses, and only had them replaced once after 2 years. This was the best gift I ever bought for myself.

So to all of you out there, please dont give up before you have a try with Scleral Lenses. If you have any questions please ask

Well done with the scleral lenses. I found them absolutely fantastic, but I did not know it was necessasry to go out of the country for them. I got mine on the NHS and although the initial lens did not fit perfectly, a slight alteration (they drilled a fenestration in it) and I was well set up. Was there something particularly difficult about your fit?

Thanks for the very positive post about the benefits of this lens. Your experience chimes with many people here for whom the scleral lens has been a life-saver (or perhaps I ought to say 'sight saver').

All the best

Andrew

I too have scleral lenses which have completely changed my life and enabled me to drive and work again. They are much more comfortable than the soft perms with which I was fitted after my grafts. It's just a shame you had to go so far and pay so much. These lenses are available, as Andrew says, on the NHS. You can be fitted at Moorfields if you are based in London or in my case in Oxford at the John Radcliffe. I think I pay about £47 per lens, but it's a long time since I needed a new one.
