On the waiting list for INTACs.

Postby David M. » Thu 18 Oct 2007 4:22 pm

Hi everyone, I thought I’d share with you my recent experiences regarding my K.C.
My last post here several months ago described a confusing consultation I had with a rather unhelpful consultant; the only useful information I came away with was a name of an INTAC specialist to whom I then got a referral to through my own G.P.
Anyway, my initial consultation with this specialist was in September at St’ James hospital in Leeds. Briefly, I was pleased to find that out that despite having severe K.C in both eyes my vision still fell within the parameters required for INTACs. As I didn’t think that the decision regarding NHS funding for INTACs would be taken until November I was then surprised to learn that NHS funding was available and that I qualified for it. Best of all the waiting time would be no more than about three months!
There was a little bit of a wait for the information sheet to come through because of the postal strike but after reading through it I contacted the consultant’s secretary. She just rang back and has confirmed I’m on the waiting list.
The procedure is to be performed on my right eye (worst of the two) under local anaesthetic and involves having just one INTAC (as in a semi-circle) inserted through a micro-incision into the inferior cornea. The single INTAC thing was new to me, (that’s what happens when you don’t get round to checking this site regularly), though I’ve just found a thread on here posted by Lynn White in September about this which I’ll be reading later. My consultant explained that he’s had good results with this procedure and believes that having two INTACs fitted doesn’t offer any long-term benefits regards improvement in vision.
So that’s it really. Although I’ve not visited this site for a while due to being away and other commitments I’d be happy to do a report for everyone when the time comes, which could be a few months away yet. I’m hoping I’ve not jumped the gun here as I’ve not even got a date and of course there’s no guarantee of success.
One last thing, this consultant told me that he currently offers privately funded C3-R at the Yorkshire Eye Hospital but mentioned that he is in discussion with the NHS/NICE regarding getting C3-R on the NHS. He said if it’s going to happen it would probably be at least a couple of years away.
Thanks for reading.
D.

Somebody complimented me on my driving yesterday - they left a note on my windscreen "Parking Fine" which was nice.

Cheers Eddie will do. I'm curious as to how it all works.
