Solution to my RGP problem ...

Hello i did make this post the other day however it has vanished from the forum, i have always had problems with RGP's i just cant wear them. I hate them in my eyes and never wear them, my optician is very good and says the fitting is great and i should stick with them. However i have been trying for about 2 years now and i still am not wearing them, he says i have to have RGP's as soft lenses would slip off my eyes. Well SS said they would slip off my eyes, however i think some form of soft lens would be all i can manage any ideas ..... what and who can i ask?

the reason why your not getting on with rgps, and if the fit is good as the otom says, it could be becuase your not motivated enough to overcome the initial discomfort. it took me about two months till i could handle rgps in my eyes properly. how soft lenses will slip of your eyes i dont know but the viswion you'll get from them will be very poor. however, you may be able to try out kerasoft lenses, if not then give softperms a go. chat to you optom about them dont take no for anwnser cos they should be available for you to be fitted with. i would say for now stay with the rgps you have now and wear them everyday if possible or maybe a day break after 4-5 days to build up the wearing time. it wont happen if you dont wear them cos your eyes will not adapt to them and try to be more motivated to wear them even though they initially feel like c**p. do you have dry eyes by any chance?

they do make my eyes dry yes, and red! i have tried for nearly 2 years now. i have kept them for days and days and they are still as horrible as the first time i put them in. so now i am after a solution to the problem.

Good to see you again! Perhaps the problem is not so much with the lens being hard as the way it rubs your eyelid and presses against your cornea.

There are soft lens options for KC, as well as hybrid lenses that combine some of the advantages of a rigid lens with s 'soft skirt'. Another althernative is the scleral or haptic lens. This fits under your eyelids, so there is no irritation; it rests on the white of your eye (the sclera) so it arches over your cornea and there is no room for bits of dust or grit to enter your eye and get under the lens.

Of all the lenses I ever tried, my favourite was my scleral. I am quite hopeful that, when the sutures come out of my left eye, and I need to be fitted with a lens again they will give me another scleral.

sorry mate i didnt readyour post properly i thought you meant 2 weeks not 2 years. i guess you've been wearing them for quite a long time and you may have dry eye. have you tried systane and artificial tears while wearing the lenses. they will help but not drastically but having dry eyes will make it more uncomfortable. if i was you i would move onto a different lens. i had the same problem as you amd found softperms really comfortable. there a loads of different lenses avaiulable so its a matter of trying them out seeing what you find comfortable.

Sorry to read that you are having so many problems with RGP lenses. I can't get on with wearing one in my right eye anymore either, but am ok with soft lenses. My eye was always red and it was so painful to wear an RGP for longer than an hour. Now I piggy back lenses using a plain soft lens with an RGP on the top. This is really fantastic, I get 15 hours wear!! My eye isn't red or painful although it is still dry. I use regular Systane morning and night before I put my lenses in and use Blink drops when I am wearing my lens. The RGP has to be one which you can piggy back with, but I would ask your optom if you would be able to try it. The main problem with two lenses is that it can make your eye dry and you have to be checked to make sure that your cornea is getting enough oxygen. I have monthly soft lenses as I was told that daily ones wouldn't let enough oxygen through. When I first started piggy backing it was a pain to clean two lenses differently but you can get used to it quickly!

You still not seeing a specialist KC lens fitter?

I know SS are sometimes the optom the hospital sometimes contracts out too, but at the confrence this year it is apparant that pretty much all high street optoms be them big chains or a small local organisation are just unable to afford the ull range of lens fitting kits like a hospital and also find it hard to stay current with the lens options available.

Ask them about piggy backing, the soft lens will not fall off, just mould to your corne which is why the 'normal' softs dont work, but will provide a soft pad for the RGP to sit. Many get on well with that option here.

Then there is the Krasoft lenses which cope for some with KC. They are thicker than a standard soft lens to give a degree of rigidity and are specifically designed for us.

If your optom has nebver heard of these, then might be time to get reffered to an optom that has.

Hi Jayboi.

I have been wearing RGP's for donkey years with relative comfort.

Following my cataract operations earlier this year, I have had very limited wearing time and some degree of discomfort. Like Sweet, I am now piggybacking and so far I am enjoying a good level of comfort with very acceptable wearing time.

Obviously, it doesn't work for everybody but it is worth asking the question.

Also, Accuity soft K lenses were also mentioned to me as a possibility so perhaps it may be worth investigating this too.
