Hi
Ive recently been told that I have keratoconus and that I would need to wear contact lenses. I have read somewhere that their are a few types of lenses that you can get and was just wondering which ones you would recommend?????????? have you tried any other types of lenses??? and if yes, are they any better/worse than the normal ones which you get to start with???????? any response if much appreciated

Hiya, I wear Rose K, they were recommended to me and I have never tried any others as these are very comfy.

I guess that the most honest answer to your question is "whatever type suits you"! Each of us is different. In my time I wore RGP corneals, Rose K, Kerasoft, Scleral ... ... ...

Of all the lenses I wore, I found the Scleral the best, but I came to it late.

When fitters try to find a lens that suits you, they will look for a lens that moves enought to allow oxygenation of the cornea and is stable enough to provide good quality and consistent vision. In my experience they seem most often to try RGP's first because they afford the best oxygenation as they move on the surface of the eye and allow the tears to flow beneath the lens.

Let us know what you get. All the best, and welcome to the forum.

Andrew

I currently wear the lenses which you get to start with (are these what you call RGO lenses???????). Apparantly the shape of my eye is very advanced and the manufacturer does not make a lens which is more of a cone shape than the lenses which I have in my eye at the moment. the only reason why I mention this is because I read somewhere that some lenses dont irritate as much but also dont improve eye sight as much therefore I wouldnt be able to wear these because of the shape of my eyes.

Hi there!

Lenses are so different for everyone that it could take a little time to find one that is comfortable for you. A lot of optoms fit us with RGP's at first although some do use soft lenses. I have been fitted with RGP's since I was 14, though I wasn't very good with them and didn't take it seriously until I was about 16.

I have tried scleral lenses but couldn't get on with them at all although I know that a lot of people do very well with them! I have had a graft and can now wear a RGP in that eye which I have never been able to tolerate before. I piggy back lenses in my other eye which is a RGP on top of a plain soft lens. This is to make it more comfortable and my eye isn't red which it used to be before.

Rose K lenses I have never tried, these are a brand name for an RGP.

Wishing you all the best in finding a lens, there are a lot of different types to try so I hope that you find one soon!

I have had good vision with rgps but my eyes don't like 'em very much, so I am about to try KeraSoft. I trialled them at the hospital and they seem very comfy.
