Hello everyone,

I currently am wearing Scleral lenses. But i was wondering if i could use Steripod instead of Amidose to fill up the lenses before inserting them into my eyes? Or is Steripod for just for rinsing the eyes, a bit like Optrex?

I only ask this as i got given a box of Steripod by my dad who used a few tubes out of the box for surgical reasons and there are alot left in the box. It is beginning to get quite expensive to keep buying Amidose, and I thought i could save a bit of money this way.

I use steripod 20ml saline to fill my lenses and i get them on prescription 4 boxes of 20 per month but i dont pay as i have a medical exemption certificate ask your GP about it and i would still check with your opt to be on the safe side as im not medically trained.

Many thanks for your reply Emma. As my next appointment isn't until September, Ill think ill give the eye hospital a ring and see if i can use Steripod, just to make sure.

I use steripod saline with sclerals. The hospital and optometrist know and approve. I get a prescription pre payment certificate because I also use drops, which makes it cheaper. The only reason I changed from Amidose, which I was given at Moorfields, was because the GP could not find Amidose on her list of items she is allowed to prescribe.

...I went to the doctor recently and he couldn't find Amidose on his list either, so gave me a few boxes of Steripod. For some reason though, Steripod doesn't feel as good in the Sclerals as Amidose. My sclerals tend to get irritable and uncomfortable quicker wearing Steripod in my sclerals. Maybe its just me! lol Does anyone know if there is a difference in ingredients in Steripod compared to Amidose which may be the reason why Steripod gets uncomfortable quicker? Does anyone have this problem too with Steripod? lol

I must say i do prefer Amidose though as you can do the lid back up. My lenses sometimes play up at work, and i tend to bring the remaining tube of Amidose to work just incase:) Cant do that with Steripod. You end up using more than one tube a day sometimes.

Are we taking about Steripod Sodium Chloride?

It may be that you are reacting to the preservative in Steripod, but that you do no0t have a similar reaction to the preservatives in Amidose. If so, I'd stop using Steripod until you can have it checked out.

Take a look at the list of ingredients. I know that the acitive ingredient in both Steripod Sodium Chloride and Amidose is the same, but the smaller ingredients may include different preservatives.

Having googled Steripod there are differnet types of this saline but only links to Amidose are to this site!

Even if they have the same ingredients, they may well be in different proportions which can have an affect.

Do you know the manufacturer of each?

There isn't any preservatives in Amidose. NOr artificial colours, flavours or other E-numbers.
NO, seriously.....
That why it doesn't stay sterile once you cut the tips off the tubes.

I've had steripod suggested for filling my sclerals during one or more of the Amidose availability crises. Prefer Amidose because you can just screw the caps back on and Steripod is harder. I find a tube of Amidose lasts about a week and can be carried roundin by lens-stuff bag in my handbag.

It may be you are reacting to preserviatives in steripod. Could it also be that the strenth (ie. amouunt of salt for each litre of water) is slightly different and one matches you natural tear strength better?
