Has anyone had an eye mould taken for a scleral lens, and if so what does the procedure entail please? Thank you

Hi ya,

I had eye moulds done about 8 months ago and they procedure was not bad at all. Basically they inject a liquid setting substance into an eye-mould, which is then inserted in the eye.

The mould takes about a minute or more to set and is only irritable when removed, although you will reminded to you focus on a spot as they need you eye to looking forward to get the perfect mould.

All in all the procedure was painless and the mould do come out good.

Thank you Dipesh, not looking forward to that though, the thought makes me cringe. Did you get a good result when you wore your sclerals, and did you a problem with them after that ?

It does not sound too bad, in fact to me not much worse than the first time sclerals were tried with me (a yellow plastic apron, not much warning of what was about to happen next and an optometrist each side of me, to hold me down I asked?)

It must be a little concerning wondering if it will all be worth while, maybe the hospital can give you some reassurance and discuss the procedure with you further before your actual appointment.

After the getting my moulds done it took me a bit of time till I got my hands on. Initially I thought they were going to give me both my lens on that day. But NO!!! - They only gave me one for my good eye. The fitting was initially weird as I was not use to wearing any contact lenses, but settled down and was comfortable.

After being shown how to wear the, clean them and take them out I was told to try it for myself. But for the life of I could not get them in properly. The young girl helping me was ever so patient with me, which I am grateful for.

My problems began while at home ...it took me a long while to get them in perfectly, but thankfully perseverance paid off and can now get it near enough first time. I've now been wearing them for 2+ months (from initial collection) and they have improved my vision.

All I can say donÂ’t worry too much, like you I go to Moorfields and see Ken Pullen. He good and understands allot more about KC than most. My only grievance is that time given between appointments.

I had eye moulds done in 1964 and again in the late 1980s. The first was truly scary because I was a child and nobody bothered to explain what was happening or why. By the 2nd time (when I was petrified because of the childhood experience) it seemed far less traumatic and only caused very minor discomfort - certainly nowhere near as bad as the average dental visit! Don't be put off - well taken moulds are (in my amateur view) the most likely route to a comfortable fit. Best of luck!
