Sounds like you are having a real rough time, so go and try and claim for the higher amount, you have nothing to loose.

It is years since I used a cane, but when I did the specialist completed the forms for registering me blind. I was given an assesment and training on how to use the stick.

When I first started I felt it was a waste of time, but as I learnt how to use it, I could find my way round most places and it got me through my first year at Uni in London.

The symbol cane is okay, but useless if you need it to help you find kerbs etc. or steps. Why not go for a full one? The RNIB run training events for new cane users. You do not have to be registered blind to use these events.

You maybe ought to apply for an increased amount of Disability Allowance. If you register blind (or, I think partially sighted) you automatically qualify for this.

If you register blind or partially sighted your local authority sensory deprivation team will give you all sorts of goodies that help with routine household tasks.

All the best
