My new Flex-Edge Lenses

My first impressions after wearing them for 2 hours- very comfortable and am getting a much sharper image than compared to my RGPs. Oh and alot more stable!

I'm looking forwar to seeing how I get on with these in the long term. I'll let you know later how I get on. Anybody else had experience with these flex-edge lenses?

Are "flex edge" lenses also known as "piggy back" lenses?

My understanding is that "piggy back" lenses are a hard rigid gas permeable lens which sit on the cone with a soft lens skirt around the circumference of the rgp.

Soft perms are the ones which are RGP in the middle bonded to a soft skirt.

Piggy backing is where you put in a normal non sight correcting soft lens to act as a cushion onto which you put a regular RGP lens.

Thanx for that clarification Gareth.

At my consultation at MREH today with Dr Cindy Tromans I asked her if I had tried out all the KC lenses possible.

In response to this Q she advised that a new lens had come out but it was still on trial.

I'm thinking that this maybe the lens she was refering to. Has this "flex edge" lens been fully tried and tested or is it still at the trial stage?

This sounds to me like a good idea especially for those whose cones are not centrally located like mine, where maintaining the lens fit is difficult.

The soft skirt would increase the cohesion and resist the lens moving off the cone.

Looks promising Amarpal please do keep us informed. Is your KC cone non central?

The latest lens I've been prescribed with, the mini scleral has been abandoned and I'm now going to try a larger diameter rgp lens for my good "non lazy" right eye the Dyna Z Intra Limbal Lenses . I'll see if I can find their website.

Hi,

I'm in SoftPerm lenses and after trying lots of different types (usual KCer story I guess) they are most definitely the most comfy I have tried.

Optometrists always seem to offer them as the last choice though - they seem to be worried about negative effects, I think due to reduced oxygen reaching the cornea.

I'd be really interested in finding out the difference between Jack Allen's lenses and the (American) SoftPerms, if there is any.

My left eye piggyback uses a Dyna Z Intralimbal as the RGP.

My right eye has a Softperm but I have a new Synergeyes lens on order for that eye (better oxygen permeability/dk). I was also getting better visual acuity with the fitting lens + over-refraction than I was getting with the Softperm ,so my hopes are high.

We are hoping that the Synergeyes PS lens will offer a steep enough base curve for my left eye (INTACS), though my OD and surgeon are still somewhat concerned about the oxygen issue in that eye. Assuming I can get a good fit, they'd still want to monitor me 4-6 times per year if I opt for this instead of continuing the piggyback.

I too am curious to see how these lenses compare to Softperm/Synergeyes.
