Patrick Staudacher

ARE, Sweden - Patrick Staudacher put a long odyssey of health problems behind him to win the super-G on Tuesday at the world championships. It was the first skiing gold medal for an Italian man at a worlds or Olympics since Alberto Tomba won both the slalom and giant slalom at the 1996 worlds in Sierra Nevada, Spain. Staudacher had never before climbed the podium in either a World Cup or major championship race."It's wonderful to achieve something even similar to him," Staudacher said of Tomba. "It's a crazy day for me. I have a tough time believing it myself."
Staudacher's health problems began when he was 16 and started having trouble seeing. For years, he tried different solutions with contact lenses and eyeglasses, but nothing seemed to work. The problem got so bad that Staudacher sat out the last worlds in Bormio, Italy, two years ago, and was diagnosed with a disorder called Keratoconus. He had a cornea transplant in June 2005.
The operation changed the shape of his eye, though, and he then had trouble keeping his contact lenses in his eyes. The least little shove would knock them out. Staudacher finally got it straightened out, but then went for a regular checkup in December and his doctor said something was wrong again. He had another minor operation and the stitches were removed last week."It's no problem now," Staudacher said. "It doesn't affect me anymore when I ski."...

Hello Anne, and welcome to our forum.

I've added the French site to our links page.

Thanks for the "famous" references; sure, they're not David Beckham, but the more that we can do to promote the condition the better!
