All-in-one solutions?

Postby Pat A » Mon 29 Jan 2007 11:19 am

As a new RGP user (well I'm trying to be!) is it OK to use the "All-in-one" solutions? I'm going away this weekend and if possible want to avoid having to carry the 3 separate bottles as I'm very short on luggage space (and weight). And I've got to take my soft lenses cleaning kit as well anyway!

I've used the search facility on this site but can't immediately find this discussed anywhere (it probably has but I've missed it knowing me!). I've seen one called Boston Simplus - which claims to clean, disinfect, condition, cushion, rinse and wet! Would that be ok?

Never used an all in one solution for RGP's, but the one I have for the Kerasoft does irritate my eye.

My wife disclosed this weekend the all in one solutions irritated her eyes which is why she stopped wearing contact lenses.

Boots do a handy RGP travel pack, still three solutions, but not a s big as what we normally have.

I used Total. It was marvelous.

I did also use LC65 for daily cleaning and later Bosch and Lomb 'elite', as well as protein remover tablets, but the fact that my lenses were stored in the same fluid as I would use to we them before insertion, and that they were always clean when they went into the little container did mean that I coudl get up, pop in and go all without too much fuss.

Note sure on availability across the pond, but I use the following solutions:

For my RGP:

Boston SimPlus

For my soft and softperm lens:

Clear Care

I'd probably use ClearCare for all three lenses if the special case (which you have to use with the solution) could hold all three.

My OD commented at my last appointment that my RGP was in very good condition. I've been using the Boston multi-purpose RGP solutions from day one. I moved to Clear Care when I got my Softperm since it is a hybrid lens and ClearCare works for both RGP and soft lenses.

Hi Pat.

I have only ever used an all-in-one solution.

I tried Boston Symplus but found it was too viscous. I have found the best for me are Boots all-in-one or Quattro as they are only as viscous as water and don’t cause me irritation.

I piggyback with one eye (soft lens under a RGP) and use the same solution and storage case for all three lenses.

Hope this helps and have a good trip

I use an all in one for my soft lens (Opti free express) but i find that for my RGP an all in one is no good. When i first had this lens i used to use Ayosept where you put the lens in the case and it does everything, you don't need to rub it.

My old optom though said that it wasn't effective as it wasn't cleaning all the protein off my lens. Since then i use Boston cleaner and conditioner and find my lens is much clearer and more comfortable. I like to clean them myself as i feel like i am doing something!!

A quick note about AOsept... you are supposed to use an additional protein remover called Miraflow with it. Clear Care is essentially AOSept with protein removal built in.

The instructions for Clear Care do say that you are still supposed to rub RGP lenses to a better clean... but you don't need any other solutions/additives.

Been using it for about 2 years and not had any problemos

All in one solutions are not the same as protein removers so they should be used as well!

Thanks - this has all been really helpful.

i think what I'm reading and understanding is that at least for the purpose of my weekend away, it will be fine to use an all-in-one to save me carting several different bottles around with me all weekend! Especially as it doesn't look like I'll be wearing the lenses for long spells at a time the rate I'm going!

The Boston Simplus, which I've bought as at least it is the same manufacturer as the solutions I'm currently using, suggests it has a protein remover in it, and you don't (apparently) need to use Saline with it either. I've noted your comment about this Mark - and I'll let you know what I think - apparently the "old" Boston Simplus has been discontinued and the one I have is a "new" variety. (That may of course mean not a lot - but you never know! They may have changed the viscosity)
