Hi everyone. Well I had my eye appointment yesterday. All was well, but my opthalmalogist is trying to resolve the problem of my lenses popping out all the time! She sugested that I try using softperm lenses (hard in the centre, soft at the sides). Was just wondering, has anybody used these lenses and do they stay in your eyes better than RGPs?
I didnt get alot of time to ask many questions. My opthalmologist has never used softperm lenses before so it should be interesting to see the results. I'm actually quite excited about getting them! I was told they are more comfortable than RGPs, which would be nice...

Yes i did try these for a long time until i had to piggy back instead because the lens was still rubbing on my eye.

It was really comfortable though!

Not worn them, but I've been told that the RGP part is of a similar size you have now, but the skirt adds a little bit so your eyelid is already over that holding the lens in place to a point.

I've also been told that it does restrict the movement to some extent.

Remeber I am quoting second hand rather than personal experience.

I wear a softperm in my right (less severe) eye and I piggy back in my left eye.

I very much prefer softperm to piggybacking, though neither gets quite the clarity that a plain old RGP will get. The comfort is very good though.

If your Dr. is concidering Softperm, you might want to ask them about Synergeyes KC lenses. Supposedly they are more durable and have better oxygen permeability. I plan to try these in a couple of weeks at my next appointment, assuming my OD gets the fitting kit in time. I hope to eventually replace my piggyback lenses with a soon to be released Synergeyes PS (post-surgery/graft) lens.

It would appear Synergeyes has FDA approval, but I can not find anything on the British MHRA site to show that they have been passed for UK use.

They may be available privatly, but until approval is gained through Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) or National Institute for health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) these will be unavailable on the NHS.

Unfortunatly they do not list much regarding products cleared for use.

Yeah.. I wasn't too sure about availability outside the US but figured I'd mention 'em anyway.

Some of these things sneak in and unless one of the optoms that post here or a patient comes across them here we can easily miss them.

Worth reminding us to keep a look out for them if you pardon the expression

I used SoftPerms back in 2001 I think it was..used them for around 18 months and got the best vision out of them then any lens Ive ever used. However, it does depend on how far adv your KC is. It got to a stage where my the central RGP was bearing down on my cornea excessivly and thus was making the eye red raw..so then went on to Sclerals \ ROSE K
