Hydrops for the first time

About 8 weeks ago i was happily working away in my little piece of personal paradise that is Faliraki,when my mood was interrupted by a strange new "firework" in my vision while looking at bright lights,as the night wore on this became a blur similar to the effect of a dry and smoky lens so i thought nothing of it and went home to get some refresh fake tears drops,so in my eyes they went but to no avail,so i removed said lens and discovered,to my horror that it wasnt my lens but my eye,so off to bed i went,slightly worried but not overly as it didnt hurt,vowing to go to the doctors in the morning.

So the next day there i am waking up in agony,eye watering like a hosepipe and i think to myself "not good at all this",so i trot off to Rhodes hospital A&E and they refer me to the eye clinic where i am duly informed i have hydrops and the specialist(im assured she is the number one in greece) gives me a prescription for 2 types of eye drops,one a steroid,one an antibiotic.

The reason im posting is because all the info online about this seems to be so full of jargon that i dont need to know,so folks,real life experiences if you will?

Hi Samba,

I would have thought someone would have posted regarding eye drops. Unfortunatly I can not offer advice having never experienced hydrops except use the sites serach function to see what experiences others have had, however this you may already have done.

I have only once experienced hydrops. Basically, it was like an opaque cloud that obscured vision but not completely. As I understand it they vary in seriousness but generally just clear up and resolve after variable periods of time. Mine took just over 3 months but some are, I understand, much quicker and some take longer to resolve.After wards an eminent Moorfields consultant told me there was no alternative but a graft.

However within 20 minutes the optometrist at the same hospital had me back wearing my scleral lens. That was almost 5 years ago and still no graft!

Not quite sure what your steroids are for but do remember being given antibiotics to avoid infection. Apart from that I was just told to stop wearing lens in that eye and wait for it to go away.

I'm sure others can give a technical explanation (beyond me) and relate their experience. There is at least one contributor who has suffered multiple hydrops and is still managing with lens.

My only after effect was a marginal improvement in vision in the affected eye. Don't panic, there is life and lens wear after hydrops.
