Mirena? A question for the ladies

Hello, Ladies of the Forum!

I have been told by my gynaecologist that I need to have a Mirena coil/IUS fitted during a hysteroscopy/laparoscopy to treat a medical condition.

I have had problems with contact lens tolerance and allergy in the past, and am wary of having the Mirena fitted as it is plastic, too. (polyethylene and something else containing silicone).

I wondered how many of you have or have had a Mirena coil as well as contact lenses for KC, and whether it was well tolerated, or tolerance problems occurred.

I would welcome your input, as this is a significant decision I have to make.

Hi Busy Lizzy,
I would suggest you don't do this. As a homeopath I have had several patients with severe reactions to this type of coil, because of the hormones it releases into your body. Two were so badly affected that they were back to the Doc begging for it to be removed within the week.

I have no idea how it affects contact lens use, but have you ever taken any other form of hormones e.g. the Pill, HRT as this might be an indicator as to how you would react to this coil.

To balance my experience of this coil, I do of course, only see people who have reacted badly to it and are coming for help. However any type of prolonged use of hormonal drugs tends to upset the endocrine system, which may cause you problems in the future.

Thanks for your reply to my query about the Mirena coil.
I've been told I most probably have Endometriosis, and during a laparoscopy and hysteroscopy the gynaecologist wants to fit a Mirena coil.
My other option is Depo-Provera, which causes bone density loss, as well as dreadful bleeding problems.

As you may recall, I've had allergies to contact lenses in the past, as well as chronic eczema almost everywhere and round my eyes.

I worry about the silica content inside the coil. Mind you, it's not actually in contact with the body tissue.

It would be helpful to know what types of adverse reactions your patients had to Mirena, and whether they alreay had allergies and eczema, etc.

This is such a difficult decision to make. The outcome will affect my ability to have children.
They need to suppress ovulation, and the combined Pill is a no-no because of the oestrogen content. Oestrogen is thought to make Endometriosis grow.
