Has anyone on the forum tried Restasis Dry eye drops? They have cyclosporin in them.
I have been given a prescription for them, and i have to order them from America.
They are quiet expensive. Just wondered if anyone had any info on them.

Thanks Anne

This might help too What is dry eye?

Not read about the drug it has at the bottom of the page, but the diagram describes the tear compositions and what dry is.

Hope this helps

Anne,

I have asked the pharmacists at work and it appears that Restasis is not on the UK list of drugs. This might be why you are having problems for these to be shipped overseas or a UK pharmacist to import them.

It is also possible that the European name is different. At work we can only find Restasis on North American/Canadian web sites.

Presumably the person writting the prescription has had it fulfilled before so it would be worth calling them and explain that you have been unable to find someone to supply this.

The manufacturer is Allegan;
Allergan Restasis Product Page and go to Contact Us at the top of the page and complete the on line enquiery.

In the mean time I have a collegue who is seeking further advice as to how to get hold of it for you. It is the sort of thing she has to do to stay a licenced pharmacist :D

Regards

Gareth

Cyclosporin eye drops are supposed to be very effective for dry eyes, but not licensed in UK at present. I know an ophthalmologist who was involved in a trial and had drops supplied by Allergan for the trial, but I am not sure if any results have been published yet.

You might be interested to know that cyclosporin eye drops have been on the market for veterinary use for some time! I had a patient who used to get them for her dog at £30 a bottle. She was on hypromellose drops herself, so eventually decided to share her drops with her dog as she couldnt afford cyclosporin! I dont know if there are any issues with long term use with cylosporin being an immunosuppressant.

I just want to make it clear that the KC group don't in any way suggest or endorse the idea that anyone should use any prescribable eye drops or other medication without themselves having been prescribed.

Hi Alay

When my Atopic Keractoconjuctivitus was first diagnosed it had got really bad .
So in April last year i started taking 60mg Prednisolone and 200mg cyclosporin with opatanol drops and FML drops. As you can imagine this worked well!!
Onc the eyes settled down i then tried cyclosporin drops [human form] but they stung like mad, i mean real pain.
I then tried the veterinary cyclosporin[Optimmune]this was no better and irritated my eyes.
So it has been suggested that i try Restasis drops and have private prescriptions to get them. Its just not easy to get them.

When i was taking oral cyclosporin i had to have blood sugar and blood pressure test weekly and and two weekly blood test.
But my eyes were white, bright and didn't itch at all :)
I only use drops now Opatonl and FML twice daily, i just need something to keep the AKC at bay.

I'll try to contact the chap who was doing the dry eye trial and see if he can help sourcing the Restasis drops and let you know in a few days.
