Hi I’m in my 40s and have had KC since my early 20s I have tried hard rigid lenses in the past I couldn’t get use to them so gave up on them years ago.I use spectacles now how ever in the last two years I been having real problems with my vision at night,I have heard about scaleral lenses and want to give them a try,can any one help me as to how I go about getting these lenses on nhs I live in Scotland

In the last twenty years or so that have been many developments in contact lens design. So it would be worth to see if you can find a more suitable lens.

There are now specialist soft lenses, mini sclerals and hybrid lenses for keratoconus. Even small rgps can be made comfortable by piggybacking with a soft lens underneath.

To have these lenses prescribed on the NHS (assuming that the system is the same in Scotland and England) you would need to be referred to a hospital eye clinic by your GP.

I’m in Scotland and, as Lia says, the pathway was a referral to the hospital through my optician (the GP can do it too) and I was thereafter referred from there to an optometrist specialising in KC and got lenses that way.
