Black Spec / Dot in Vision

Postby kieran1985 » Mon 12 Jul 2021 12:50 pm

Hi All

Havent posted in a good while as things have been okay - i have piggy back lens and in the last few weeks ive noticed a type of floater or black spec in my vision, its quite central on my better eye and quite annoying, only its a black / grey speck that follows my eye around. Went to the eye clinic and they have put me on antibiotics and said i have a stain on my eye. Anyone experieced this before?

Hi Kieran,
I've had plenty of floaters and black specks over the years, but they've all been transient with long periods of time when I haven't seen them at all. And even when they're there, I mostly only seem them against a white or bright background. I hope the antibiotics do the trick and get rid of this for you.

For anyone else reading this, if you do have "black spots", "floaters" or other effects that you have not noticed before always get it checked out. There are other non-KC conditions that might be indicated.

Thank you, Graham. While the odd floater is usually harmless, any sudden onset of a lot of floaters, a shadow across the vision, flashing lights, can be signs of a detached retina which needs speedy treatment to repair. So as Graham says, do get things checked out.

Just to put my mind at rest the doctor done a dilated eye exam last week - would he have detected a detached retina in his exams if I had one ?

I think it would be reasonable to assume that would be one of the things he would have been looking for. Clearly, if it's still around after the antibiotics have finished it would be time to go back.

Just an update

Had 2 scans and 3 eye specialists looking at my corneal today and they think it’s a partial blockage to the eye and have given me medication to thin the blood to try and remove the black dot

That's good that they have a clearer idea of what might be causing it. Sometimes trying one medication can be part of the diagnosis i.e. if it doesn't work try something else.
