What solutions/drop do you use

Postby Damien W » Sun 06 Aug 2006 9:09 am

I tried a search for this info and found nothing, so I hope I haven't doubled up.

Thought it might be a good idea to share what we use to clean, store, wet etc etc our contact lenses (if used of course) so those new to KC can get ideas or even those old to KC as well.

It's not to recommend this or that to anyone, just general info (if this is a bad idea mods, please feel free to delete the thread)

My suggestion is to detail;

Type of contacts:
Wear time:
Wetting solution (drops) used:
Cleaning solution used:
Condition solution used:
Coments:

So I guess I'll start.

Type of contacts: RGP

Wear time: 16 hours a day, every day. Have been known to wear them for 3-4 days straight when needed for my job

Wetting solution (drops) used: PVA tears

Cleaning solution used: use a combination solution taht does everything called Total Care. It is made by Advanced Medical Optics inc. I have just recently changed to this as I used to use Boston Simplus but this is no longer being made (I have been told)

Condition solution used: as above

Coments: I find the single cleaning/conditioning solution a bonus as there is no handleing mistakes, no fussing around using 2 or 3 solutions and it makes things easy for my job and when camping. I can clean the contacts and put them straight in and off I go again. I can also use it as a wetting drop if I want.
The PVA tears are good as I get about 45 mins between drops (sometimes more, sometimes less). The only thing I find is (what I call) the goop that sticks to my eye lashes. This is easy to remove though and doesn't cause too many problems.

Ok, I'll add my details...

Type of contacts: Scleral

Wear time: 5 hours. Can go to about 8 at extreme limits, but then can't wear the lens for about a week.

Wetting solution (drops) used: AMO Total Care

Cleaning solution used: Miraflow; though I think that could be hard to replace now.

Condition solution used: None. Scleral lenses are kept dry, but...

Filling solution used: after wetting with Total Care, I then fill the lens with either Amidose or Celluvisc. I get slightly better vision (at least initially) with Amidose, but greater long-term comfort with the more viscous Celluvisc.

It'll all be over on Friday though, as the only eye I have that can tolerate a lens at all gets a graft.

Type of contacts: RGP

Wear time: 16-17 hours a day... sometimes even longer though/

Wetting solution (drops) used: Any comforting eye drops really- have bneen using the Tesco one recently.

Cleaning solution used: Either Boston cleaning solution or Asda cleaning solution.

Condition solution used: Either Asda conditioning soultion or Boston again. I find that they are both of same quality, giving the same comfort, wetability etc during the day. The same price too when I buy the three month supply box of Boston.

Comments: I used to use the all in one solutions too- mainly because it was alot cheaper, but after I started using conditioning solutions, I really could see a difference in lens wearing time. [/b]

Type of contacts: Soft (at the moment)

Wear time: about 8 hours when the pollen counts low

Wetting solution (drops) used: Systane (preservative free).

Cleaning solution used: Regard (preservative free). great stuff, works a treat and keeps the eyes moist. needs its own special lens case though, as its UV sensitive.

Condition solution used: Above

Filling solution used: ?

Type of contacts: RGP & Daily Soft lenses

Wear time: 16-17 hours a day... sometimes even longer though/

(drops) used: Blink

Cleaning solution used:

Used to be Solo Care Hard, but I can no longer get it, so I now clean RGP with LC 65 then rinse and store in Total.

I then have to rinse 1 lens in Saline insert in right eye then insert daily soft in left eye. Then I pop out the right rgp rinse in saline then insert daily lens then reinsert the rgp.

Only doing this two part shuffle for just under a month.

Lens wearing time has increased, but so have my headaches.

The trade off seems ok at present.

Ok heres what I use

Type of contacts - Rose-K (Right), Rose-K with CIBA vision Night & Day (piggy back) (Left)

Wear time: About 12 Hrs (Left) 8 Hrs (Right)

Wetting solution (drops) used: None (Sensative to everything it seems)

Cleaning solution used: Quattro all in one (for the RGP's and the soft)

Condition solution used: Quattro

Before inserting my lenses and if they need refreshing during the day I rinse them in saline as I seem to be sensative to most solutions as well

Type of lenses: RGP sclerals, with daily-disposable soft lens under the right scleral, piggybacking.
Wearing time: depressingly variable! - depending on pollen count, poor air quality ratings, bright sunlight, etc etc. The RGP scleral alone in left eye can be up to 12 hours every other day in good times, or can be too sore to go on within an hour - particularly if I overdid it in previous days. Piggybacking combo in right eye generally more comfortable - may be 12 hours plus, but vision has deteriorated to not being able to read print long before then.
Right eye with RGP scleral alone (without soft lens under) absolute max of 6 hours every third day.

Wetting solution: Boston/B&L (same stuff, different names) for the sclerals.
Solutions for soft lenses: none; they come packed in saline, and are thrown away after use.
COnditioning solution: is this what people store lnses wet in? - if so, none, not applicaable. Sclerals stored dry; soft lenses daily disposables.
Cleaning solution: none. I clean the sclerals in washing up liquid, rinse all the washing up liquid, bubbles etc off with water, dry on tissue and store dry. DOn't clean soft lenses, they're disposables.
[At this point, some optom or other will no doubt chime in with the obligatory lecture on how this is a bad idea. I shall take as little notice of it as ever!!!! - Moorfields (who don't make any moeny selling proprietary solutions!!) are perfectly happy, and I've never had any problems with it in years. And it's cheap, readily available, no allergy problems, unlike many people have with CL solutions - and MEH actually like people to do this, because the price/availability means they don't stint the stuff, like people trying to economise on expensive CL cleaners, so do a good job. Nevertheless, someone will try and lecture us all......!]
Filling solution: before putting in left scleral on its own, fill it to brim with Amidose saline. DOn't like amidose much, nevr have. Much preferred K-Lens, far more comfortable, but they don't make it now.
Same for putting in right scleral alone; for piggybacking combo, clean and wet scleral as above, rinse off excess wetting solution, then rinse in amidose, fish soft lens out of its blister pack, put inside the scleral, then put a blob of Celluvisc inside, and put that lot in together. Celluvics too sticky for optimal comfort, and tends to make vision a bit blurry until lens combo has been in long enough for tears to have diluted Celluvisc. Can fill with amidose instead - less sticky/blurry problem, but the soft lens tends to float about in a scleral-full of saline, so easier to get in skew-wif, oops.
Have tneded to stick to Celluvisc on what-gain-on-swings-lose on-roundabouts principle, and try to arrange not to have to read, etc just after putting them in.
Hope this helps.

Type of contacts: RGP

Wear time: 12 hours normaly can go upto 18

Wetting solution (drops) used: Purely for the eye and not for lenses is Systane

Cleaning solution used: Boston Advance Cleaning solution

Condition solution used: Advance Conditioning solution

Filling solution used: Advance Cleaning/Conditioning solution

Cleaning solution rinsed off with Saline and weekly protein remover used. Keeping my eyes well hydrated seems to be the key to good lens comfort and lens wear.
