Contact lens help

Postby brettwales » Thu 10 Jun 2021 8:13 am

Morning all,

I was given my contact lenses yesterday and am struggling getting used to the amount of moisture in my eyes when using them, I know it's only been one day but is there anyone who can provide me with any tips on how to help with this, it basically feels like I've got eye drops in constantly.

Thanks again Brett

Ah, where to start.

What sort of lenses are they RGPs (i.e. the smallest ones) or something else?
What solutions are you using?
How long are you wearing them for?
How soon does the moisture start?
Are the lenses uncomfortable in any way, either when you put them in or have been wearing them?

The general advice would be to start with short wearing times (an hour or so) with breaks of an hour or two between and gradually increase the wearing steps over a week or so.

The irony is, those of us how have suffered from dry eyes would "kill" for a bit of moisture!

Thanks for your reply Graham,

I've only been wearing them for a few days, and have read in regards to trying them for an hour and then taking them out and trying again before and trying to do this, o think it's going to be a case of getting used to, but when it comes down to the dry eyes in the future I will probably regret moaning.

I've been given RGPS and am using

Lens plus ocupure saline
Boston advance cleaner
Boston conditioning solution

I have to admit I have been struggling to get my head around everything and haven't ever worn contacts before so it's been a real test to me.

Thanks

I would not be too concerned on day two. It can take easily two-three weeks before things feel settled. The natural reaction of your eye is to think I've got something 'foreign' here and just increases the tear flow.

Keep in touch as it will be good to know how it progresses.

Brett, with RGPs I find holding the eyelids as far back as you can helps, approaching the eye slowly, placing it on, then wait a second before almost placing the eyelids back down. It's a skill that can take time to master and even those of us who have been doing it for decades can sometimes struggle.
Another tip - stare ahead as you're doing the above
