NHS beds going

Postby Green » Wed 29 May 2019 3:12 pm

Moorfields no longer have NHS beds so after surgery no matter what state you're in you go home.
Whereas other hospitals keep you in overnight for the same operation, so clearly this is not a clinical decision it's economic.

The "hostel" has no staff, is not accessible till 9pm and you might be out of day surgery long before then and need to be lying down. Relatives can't stay with you if you need help and you have to be out by 6.30am.

You can't even buy an overnight bed in their private wing. So private patients get the bed NHS do not.

I was in huge amount of pain after my re-graft, I couldn't open the other eye till the following day so left hospital blind.
The pain was so great every bump and pot hole in the road hurt.

This is not good.

so why isn't our national charity making a public statement about this? and direct action against it?

When I had my graft done in Windsor in 2006 they only had a day ward and no overnight stay facilities. I reminded then that I often have trouble coming round completely from the anesthetic, nearly 20 hours after a hip operation, this was actually in my notes, They booked me into a private hospital around the corner for the night after the graft, escorted by a nurse in a taxi for all of about 300 yards and then picked up in the morning for my discharge, I was not the only one they did this for that day.

Because it could be viewed as political and some charities refuse to do any activism which is viewed as political so that includes government or NHS policies

Charities can do politicised campaigning in achieving objectives which might include better quality of care and life.
Oxfam produced a stunning video on corporate tax evasion with really provocative imagery of people being detached from ventilators, IV's and incubator. It really got the message across;

Health is a political issue, our NHS could be traded with the US (reported only in the last couple of days in MSM). Their healthcare insurance companies are notorious, they are a leading cause of bankruptcy for Americans and the poor are devastingly neglected. It's something to fear as our NHS has been defunded and the infrastructure is in place for a take over. How many of us could afford it?

Not being political is actually a political action too. There is no apolitical position. Imagine if grafts or lens became unaffordable? No NHS beds in a leading hospital is the canary in the mine....

Moorfields hospital, charity and research will be relocating, there will be public consultation so there's an opportunity for charities & individuals to offer feedback and suggestions

https://www.moorfields.nhs.uk/news/aeco ... e-hospital

I would raise;

The need for overnight NHS beds after graft surgery because if you're in pain it's hell. It also assumes pa tients have enough vision in the other eye to be able to remove mucus after removing the eye pad.

The need for any attached hostel area for people travelling long distances to be open before 9pm and not shove them out at 6.39am and permit x1 relative or friend to be with the patient.

To address cost of lens solutions for people on the lowest incomes rather than PALS response of get friends or relatives to buy it. This is pertinent with unprecedented levels of poverty and long periods with no income via Universal Credit as evidenced by Prof Philip Alston's UN report in addition to Trussell Trust and CA

To consider emergency lens problems access, ie a dedicated optom to provide emergency appts (and teaching) because currently calls/emails are not responded to meaning months of waiting or A&E.

To do research and action on provision of variable impairment to be part of visual registration to support our patient group socially and in education and employment.
