Stem cell transplant then cornea graph

Postby philip cooper » Wed 15 May 2019 7:15 pm

Hi group.

I am new on here. Joined to get some information. I am going to be having a stem cell transplant into my eye then 6 months later a cornea graph.

Once I get to the cornea graph stage what can you do. Can you work or do you have to completely rest for months ?

Hi Philip,
No, you don't have to completely rest for months. How much time you have off work depends on the sort of work you do. Most people take a couple of weeks off work but if the job involves heavy lifting a few more weeks are needed. When I had my grafts, I managed to negotiate a staged return to work, so for the first few weeks back I worked shorter hours. After the surgery, the main restrictions are on heavy lifting, weight training and contact sports. You'll be on steroid eye drops to prevent rejection after the surgery, but apart from that, life will more or less go back to normal.
Quite a few of us here have had grafts, so do come back with more questions if you have them. I take it your graft is not for keratoconus, but I think the basic principles are similar whatever the reason. All the best.
