Corneal graft with severe allergys

My partner is due to have a full corneal graft really soon but after researching alot online is really worried about his allergys afterwards he's particularly allergic to dust mites but has allergys to pretty much everything he has blepharitis allergic eye ect we were just wondering if anyone else has had a full graft who suffers with allergys and what the outcome was post op good or bad we would like to hear your story's thanks sian

Hi Sian and welcome,
Although I've had full corneal transplants, I don't have allergies. I'm assuming that your partner's surgeon knows all about the allergies and will take them into account in the post op treatment and advice. There's always a risk of rejection with grafts, and I believe that is higher for people with allergies. But if rejection episodes are dealt with quickly, the rejection can usually be reversed. (I had several rejection episodes in both eyes, all successfully treated so the grafts were fine). The important thing is to go straight to A&E at the first sign of anything not quite right after the initial settling down period (the eye going red round the edges of the graft, return of light sensitivity, pain or deterioration of vision can all be signs of rejection).
And the operation can't go ahead until a consent form is signed. So if your partner hasn't had a chance to talk through his concerns so far, do encourage him to raise them with the hospital and hopefully get reassurance.

a lot of the time KC is accompanied by atopic allergies so excema and asthma and hayfever being hte most common, I have a lot of allergies along side the above, and if I had known how bad my transplant would have ended up Id not have had it done, as deeply regret it. Yes rejection episodes can be reversed as can infection but as I had 11 months solid chronic infection post transplant and multiple more since, allleading to severe scaring resulting in no useful sight from the transplant I wish id known then what i know now as id not have had my transplant done.
Your partner has to do what is in his best interests after consultation from his medical team whom know his situation best.
