Scleral lens solution

Postby dalcoo » Sun 10 Jul 2016 6:14 pm

Hi
I've recently been fitted with scleral lenses after being told at Bristol eye hospital that I wasn't suitable for cornea transplants as my corneas were too thin at the edges to sew to....... I have 2 questions
Are scleral a my only option now??
Also
I was sent home from vision express last week where sclerals were fitted with a few steri pods to use to fill lenses before fitting..... I went to my local Specsavers for more supplies and they sold me Boston conditioning solution(advanced comfort formula). I was surprised at how different the solution was, much thicker and very slippery, but way less problems with air bubbles...
Has anyone used this solution with rigid sclerals and if so am I ok to use it long term??
Thanks for your time people
Darren

Hi Darren and welcome,
I've never worn sclerals, but all the people I've talked to who do, use Amidose or steri pods to fill the lenses with. I don't think the solution you've now been given is the right one, though someone who wears scerals would be able to tell you for sure. Can you not contact the optometrist who fitted the sclerals for you to check this out?
Anne

Hi Darren. I was advised by staff at Moorfields to use a saline solution with as low a preservative content as possible to avoid damage to the surface of the cornea in the long term - and Amidose is the lowest going. I think the conditioning solutions are for lens storage. I was advised to use Quattro for this.

I've always used amidose. Have been using it for the last ~12 years. Only in rare special circumstances would I use a standard off the shelf saline solution.

I too only use Amidose saline.
I didn't know Vision Express fitted sclerals I go to JR OXFORD to the Scleral lens clinic. Sclerals might not be your only option.
There are sclerals, mini sclerals and Profiles. I have moved from sclerals to Profile14 and am about to go for tests for profile16.
Tomorrow to be specific.

What are profiles? I can't really tell from the info on that page?

They are small gas permeable lenses that vault the cornea and similar to a scleral but totally different they have a small pool of saline between lens and the cornea.
the profile 14 is 14mm diameter and the profile 16 is 16mm diameter.

So similar to a mini-scleral just smaller as it sits on the iris as opposed to the sclera?

Interesting, I've never heard of these and will follow up to see what the advantages are over a scleral or mini-scleral.
