Greetings.
Just recently diagnosed with KC, and I have a really straighforward question.
Does KC affect the duration of life ?
While browsing the web, I found some studies, but all of them were inconclusive(to me).
Another thing.. does anyone know people with KC, aged 60, 70 or more years?
Thanks.

Hello Miko,
I've certainly not heard anything about KC being an indicator of a less-than-average lifespan...
Unless of course you consider that we're probably more likely than average to be run over by the bus we didn't see or some other lack-of-sight related accident

I too read that study so I don't think you are crazy! Further study said they had not found any evidence of KC shortening your life span. A bigger question would be...how do older folks get their lenses in to function?

Hi there
I'm a Hospital Optometrist, and I can remember going to a lecture on KC quite a few years ago where Prof Geoff Woodward (of Moorfields and City University) raised the interesting question of why we have very few older contact lens patients with KC - what happens to them? You will pleased to know that he quoted a research study which concluded that people with KC did NOT have a shorter life expectancy! (sorry I can't remember the reference)
Presumably , some people have grafts, and others settle for inferior vision with glasses, but it's still a puzzle.
Incidentally, this week I supplied lenses for the first time to a 87 year old lady who'd just had a graft. I decided to go for a 14mm diameter lens so that she could see it and handle it more easily, but she managed to put it in and out with no problem at all. So - I can't see any time limit on experienced wearers managing their CLs!
