Some interesting news which I thought was worth sharing. Richard Lindstrom and Roy Rubinfeld have commented in recent weeks about the success they've been having with combined Conductive Keratoplasty and 'epi-on' cross-linking. Not only has it stabilised the condition, but the cornea ends up flatter and the patient is better able to get good results with contact lenses or glasses. Lindstrom mentions that he uses this method to treat 'mild-to-moderate' cases of KC specifically.
The advantage of this method over something like PRK is that it involves no removal of tissue, so particularly good for those with thin corneas. Also, it's interesting to read that 'epi-on' crosslinking is now judged to be just as successful as 'epi-off' providing the exposure to riboflavin and UV light is increased to take account that the epithelium acts as a barrier.

I think we're still a few years away from there being a consensus about which procedures work and which don't in terms of reversing the effects of keratoconus. Nonetheless, since cross-linking has become popular, there seems to be more and more research into what operations can be combined with cross-linking, which surely bodes well for the future.
