My brother had a corneal graft several years ago and like yours it was pants and he couldn't wear a contact lens. He has since had a second graft a slightly different type and done properly at Bristol Eye Hospital. This was followed up later by laser treatment and the results are fantastic.

I may have to have a corneal graft and my question is a bit on the selfish side. How long after the operation might it be before I could ride my horse?

I was diagnosed about 3 years ago and have alwyas worn contact lenses. I vision is good with them but i am getting increasingly more sensitive to light. Does this mean that my condition is worsening as I am terrified of it getting so bad that i have to have a graft. Do lots of sufferers end up having grafts?

Hi Emma, your vision can change suddenly or can remain stable for years everyone seems to be slightly different.
Light sensitivity appears to be something that all of us suffer from. Do you have regular checkups ?
it could be that you are wearing your lenses too long and an early indication of this is that the irritation to your eye makes you more light sensitive almost like mild hayfever. Giving your eyes a couple of hours off now and again should help.

Hi Emma
if your contacts become a problem for whatever reason it doesnt HAVE to be graft next - you can have sceral lenses (works for us!)or a combination of lenses . Dont worry if the transplant news looks downside at the moment, its usually very positive, check back through the messages and youll see. Worth a few evenings reading!!!
When Dale got light sensitive he had one pair of prescription specs dipped ie shaded - looked cool!

Another horse-person on here! - great! It this your own horse
you ride?

I'd guess the answer is: it depends how hard work your horse is
to ride and where/what you do - eg. gentle hacking,
cross=country, etc.

But you need to fix someone to do the mucking out for a while,
and carry the hay/straw/shavings bales and water buckets about,
because you won't be allowed to do heavy lifting, etc, for some
time. Ha! - what a perfect excuse to get out of daily mucking out!
You'll also want to look out for getting dust (from the hay and
straw, or slivers of wood shavings) in your eyes.

Good luck with it.

Rosemary

(limping about very sorely cos the horse she was riding this
morning went too vlose to the fence and one foot got caught the
wrong side of the fence post. Horse went on and post didn't -
ouch!)

Hi Rosemary,
Its my own horse. He is 16.2 Cleveland Bay Cross 12 years old and I do everything on him. I normally ride every day when I finish work for at least an hour.
Usually flat but in the summer showjumping and in Spring and Autumn Hunter Trailling and when I am not riding or working I paint horses and dogs in soft pastel

Don't they mind, what would the RSPCA say how do you keep them still long enough, doesn\t it wash off when they go out in the rain ?
