Dear Andrew (1999), I think your hospital should supply you with the sucker as they are providing you with your lenses - it is a necessity. However, if this is a problem, then check out the Innovative Sclerals website at http://www.sclerals.com. If you contact them I am absolutely sure they will provide you with a sucker! Good luck and take care. SUE

Another suggestion for the tears, I use Liquifilm Tears from Allercan, personally find drops easier than the gel. Again you can buy them over the counter at the chemist but might be best to check with doctor first.
Have also used viscotears in the past, another gel, there seems to be plenty around so am sure you will find something to suit, Good Luck.

hi
a question to all who have had a transplant ... i have just come back from my doctors as for the past week (on and off) op eye has been very sore, weepy, stinging and pricking (feels like i have been cutting onions ). been to doctors (yet another different doc who neva heard of KC )looked at it and said the cornea is clear and no sign of any infection.i explained that i was seeing my surgeon on mon 8th sept and that i felt a stitch was lose.doc said to ring eye clinic which i did. i explained again to the nurse what KC was and that i had transplant and thought stitch was lose, she said i could come in the afternoon but if its a stitch lose only my surgeon would be able to take it out ,and surgeon not avaliable till my appointment on mon. i have had this before been to clinic and needed stitch removed and coz my surgeon wasnt in i had to wait till arranged appointment a few weeks later.
my question is ( at last ) is this normal for only your surgeon to take out stitches ? what if in the mean time it gets infected?
any help/advice i would be grateful for .
thanx sarah x

Hi Sarah, I had my first two stitches out recently (performed by my surgeon) However, when I had a checkup two weeks ago, I was seen by one of his registrars. He told me that a stitch had come loose, (diagonally opposite the two I had removed) explained how this could cause problems, and told me he was going to remove it. Admittedly, he did go and speak to my surgeon first-who was happy for him to do it.

I haven't experienced what you describe, although when it was really hot a few weeks ago, my grafted eye did feel uncomfortable at times.

Just wondering if your hospital gave you an emergency number to contact if you suspect there is something wrong "out of hours" so to speak. I was told to contact the duty eye doctor at my local A&E if I can't contact where I usually attend.
Hope that helps!

Rob.

Well, I had my stitches out of the Right eye a couple of weeks ago, and it wasn't the surgeon who did it, - he asked one of the doctors on duty to do it. MY eye has been fine ever since!

Sounds to me like someone is unwilling to risk doing something they might later be criticised for, so the yare saying that 'only' your surgeon can do it.

My daughter has had KC 4 about 5years. Now in a deterioration phase and has been told to consider graft. She is a student @Newcastle uni and I live in the midlands. Her Consultant has suggested she transfer from here to Newcastle for her treatment. Does anynone know of a specialist in KC in the Newcastle area?

Sarah
You asked about stitches after a graft. I think people have either one long stitch or several smaller individual ones. I had a continuous one with 24 separate stitches and they were tighened once and then taken our after 7 months. All came out at one, with the Eye doctor, a local anaethetic and a slit lamp! Sounds painful and scary but I promise it did not hurt and it just felt odd. I don't think I would want anyone else taking the stitches out other than the eye doctor!

Hope you are all well. I have been lurking, reading messages but not posting. Freddy

Dear Harpo
I have had a graft and it really was not as bad as I expected. I am quite a coward and although there is some discomfort of a few hours I found I felt "well" in a couple of weeks. I have to say I did not see the benefit of the surgery for some time, probably measured in months. I now though count myself as very lucky and I see really well at times. The choice of surgery is very personal and I guess our situations vary. Do email me off list if you want to ask more. Best wishes for the 8th. Freddy
