Allergic to lens & solution?

Hi

Im new to this forum even though I was diagnosed over 23 yrs ago. My KC seems to speed up then slow right down again. More recently my vision has become very poor again. My specialist thinks that I may becoming allergic to either my contact lens solution or the material that my len's are made from. My left eye already prefers a different type of material compared to the right....
I wondered if anyone else had experienced this problem & what type of lens solution other KC sufferers are using? I have been told that I have very very dry eyes & have to use Celluvisc drops several times a day. "Fogging" is a continual problem! I look forward to your replys.

Some people do become intolerant of rgps after many years of wearing them successfully. The good news is that there are many more KC contact lens designs and materials than there used to be even a few years ago, so a change of lens might do the trick (special soft lenses for KC, hybrid lenses, semi scleral and scleral lenses from various manufacturers). There's also a lot of different cl solutions and wetting drops. I've always used the Boston solutions and ordinary wetting drops (eg Blink, Refresh) but you may need to experiment with different ones to find what works best for you.

I am allergic to "cheap" solutions, like own brand supermarket ones.

I use Alcon Opti-Free Express Lasting Comfort. It is approved for soft lenses but I and others on this forum use It with hard lenses. It actually does give me lasting comfort, and uses a disinfectant called PolyQuad which if I remember correctly is unique to Alcon

I find traditional RGP lens solutions too thick/viscous and yes, they cause fogging.

It is afterall the tear layer that helps us see in RGPs, so I like mine to be as watery as possible

Hello - I've had some allergy problems over the Summer this year. Could have been hayfever related or could have been something that got absorbed by the lenses. I wasn't sure if it was the solution or not but decided to change anyway (with approval from my optom) - using Sauflon's ComfortVue now. I guess I'll need to see how things go. I've recently had some fogging which seems to come and go during the day so will need to speak to my optom about that! I also use Clintas Soothe re-wetting drops which are preservative free! All the best!
