hi all,

ive had keratoconus since i was about 14.im now near the dreaded 30 ekkkkk.

anyway just been for another eye test.i never really had it checked on as mush as i should have done.had 4 young children so just didnt have the time.

now the youngest is 7 is my turn

i went into asdas as it was the closest for an eye test who then wanted there chappy to look at my eyes for contacts.who informed me there range didnt go that far which upset him as he informed me he wouldnt have minded a bash on my eyes.(typical)

my main question is on the prescripton things ect ...i dont understand them at all


the info i have is

RE uncorrected v 6/18+ ,sph x, cyl 1.25,axis 72 half,VA 6/12+2

LE uncorrected v 6/60, sph +2.25, cyl 4.50, axis 90, VA 6/21-z (maybe a 2)

mire distortion

r=+2
l=+4

so whats it all mean?????

im being refered to the hospital for im assuming contacts which ive been told will hurt as my eyelid will catch all the time.(not sure if i like that idea)

Contact lenses may not hurt. I wore them for decades without discomfort. may people with KC manage to live their whole lives with comfortable contact lens wear.

The hospital clinic will have a huge range of different sorts of lens and lens materials.

the vision in your left eye seems worse than in your right. But not to panic. These are uncorrected values. With lenses you may have quite good sight.

I am not going to venture an explanation of your readings. There re lots of optometrists here who can give you a deifinitive explanation!

im in swindon,wiltshire,not sure what the eye clinic is like here.i moved from hampshire last may and havent needed to visit the hosp for anything.

There is sure to be somebody from your part of wiltshire who uses the site. I know that the services we enjoy in this part of Scotland are pretty excellent, and I hope that the Swindon services are just as good!

i am unable to offer an explanation on your prescription but just wanted to reassure you that wearing contact lenses is not always painful, i've worn them for over 25 years now and i do have far more good days than bad with them.

also don't worry i too was diagnosed at 14 but i'm rapidly approaching 40!!! so your still a youngster at 30.

I grew up in Chippenham which is near Swindon but now live in Bristol. You are lucky with the choice of hospitals around you can either use the new one in Swindon (not sure if they have an eye department) or both Bath and Bristol have large eye deparments.

Hope so to..i left sorting my self out years ago due to having 4 young children....just never seemed to have the time for appointments or be ill

now youngest is 7 i just felt it was time t sort myself out and maybe learn to drive...if i can see that is.

Ive only lived here a year,they also have the great western hospital which is new have no idea what its like tho

Basically, RE/LE is Right Eye, Left Eye

The 6/18 and 6/60 quoted, I beleive may be your uncorrected vision and the latter 6/12 and 6/21 is the corrected.

Lens comfort primarily comes down to how well you take to them and the quality of lens fit.

This depends on where the cone is and the severety. With the large range of lenses, the optom will map your eye and based on that decide what style of lens may best fit. They will probably try several and will look at how the lens fits on your eye, the movement of the lens when you blink (are the lids rubbing or pushing the lens about), is ther room for the tears to flow around, behind and infront of the lens.

They can get time to get used to and for some of ust, comfort has also come down to the contact lens care solutions and perhaps the need to use eye drops to aid the tears.

For me I took to the lenses quite well, but can only tolerate one lens solution manufacturer and need lubricating eye drops.

We all have differnet experiences, so you may well take suggestions here and there and tailer them specififally to your needs. However you may be like a vast majority and have no issues at all.
