Hi John
Don't cancel your appointment.
It sounds like You are a new referral therefore you are automatically referred to a consultant. In my opinion you can't get better than Professor Buckley! He will assess you and you may even see Ken Pullum shortly afterwards (same day).

Hi John
The previous message was from me. Ken is an Optometrist, in other words he measures refraction, and is ace at fitting lenses. The medical side of the Profession if you like. Mr Buckley is the top man, but also a surgeon.E-mail me or phone if you have any other queries on this.

its good to hear your graft have been trouble free. i would love to hear more stories of people who have had grafts and no problems. all i have been hearing so far is people who have had problems with grafts......no hard feeling to those.........what i mean is that some times its good to also hear all success stories to get more encouragement to go for grafts. i am due for a graft in my left eye but keep postponing it.

Hi Amanda,

Thanks for the note, you've put my mind at rest. I just wanted to avoid seeing Prof. Buckley, and being told "you need to see Ken, come back in three months!".

I'll acknowlege the appointment and wait as patiently as I can until January.

Thanks again,

John

Hi Everyone,

I am due to go to my first contact lens clinic appointment and just wondered about the lenses. I know there are a few around but will I get to choose which ones I wear or will they be recommended?

I noted that a few of you have RGP corneals and some of you have Sclerals. Am I best asking for sclerals right from the off or are they for more advanced KC? Luckily mine is still in the mild stages at the moment as I have only been diagnosed 3 months.

I am interested to read your advice as I have read some of the problems and benefits associated with each kind of lens. I would appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks very much,

Ally

Hi Ally As far as which lens is best, it is very much up to individual needs, life styles and preference. Scleral lenses are a solution for alot of people who have advanced Keratoconus because they cover the whole eye. With corneal lenses as the KC progresses the cone becomes steeper and these lenses either fall out or become very uncomfortable, or both! BUT there is no reason why people can't wear sclerals even if thier KC is quite mild. If for example you did alot of rock climbing or swimming you would probably benefit from sclerals. The sclerals are not as easy to initially fit therefore this puts some people off, but once you are used to them they are usually more comfortable as the surface of your eye has less contact with the lens and is bathed in N/saline.
RGP stands for rigid gas permeable, which allows more oxygen to the eye=less blood shot and more comfortable. Modern lenses both corneal and sclerals are usually made with RGP materials.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Amanda,

Yes this helped a lot and I was able to take the information I have found here to the Contact Lens Clinic as they called me last minute with a cancellation.

I had a full eye exam and I was given two options. To have glasses which would be fine when I am still but once I start moving about the image would drive me nuts due to the make up of the prescription. The second option was to have a contact lens for my Left eye as although I have KC in my right eye as well my vision is still quite good in that eye. The Lens would not offer as good a quality of vision as the glasses but is more ideal for someone on the go all the time. I decided to go for the contact lens in my left eye.
I was tried out with a tester lens which was got from a pack of various trial lenses. The one which was selected was approximately 99% accurate to what will become my prescription. It felt really really odd at first as I have never worn lenses before and I was very nervous. I tried it in for about 15 mins and I was encouraged to go outside and get a coffee or something and try to get used to it. I hadn't realised how blurred my vision had become even with mild KC. With the lens in everything seemed so crisp, clear and bright, it was amazing.

So decision made I am to get a Rose K lens in 2 weeks and I actually cannot wait. It has been invaluable that I have had the knowledge from this support group about various lenses and treatments, also the psychological effects of having the condition. My new clearer vision will be a godsend at work but I think I will still have problems with Doctors handwriting ;o)

Anyway thanks to all, you are great.

Ally
