in answer to the question -What is the Scleral Lens?
try visiting website Innovative Scerals Ltd which is Ken's company that makes them. Ken is my son's advisor and hero!
They are rigid gas permeable lenses that are about 1.8cm diameter so they cover all the front of the eye, only touching down on the sclera (tough white bit).
to everyone out there that's got sclerals-
My son dale has joined you!! Dale is 17, has severe learning difficulties, down's, autism ad the kind of lifestyle that is known as "challenging". I had adjusted to the idea of him being registered blind when I realised he could have lenses if we worked hard enough - he was give his first lens 12 days ago, is wearing it 5 - 6 hours a day now, it's hugely difficult getting it in and, curiously, even trickier getting it out - but the idea of being able to see drives us on and today when I asked Dale 'lens now or later' and he said "now", I knew we were getting there!
Would be interested to hear from anyone who is a carer helping someone else deal with KC

To Paul (1942) - I hope you don't have to wait too much longer for your op. As you're starting college in September, you may be interested in the new leaflet which the group has produced which students can give to their teachers/tutors. It explains what keratoconus is, and how schools and colleges can help students with KC if their vision is affecting their studies. If you'd like a copy, please e-mail me anneklepacz@aol.com Good Luck! Anne

Great news! - well done, Dale.

Yup! Every new lens I get, I have to get the knack of getting it out again. The getting it in bit does get easier....

In the light of other postings, I should maybe add that being an old lazy slob is **not** something that is recommended!!!! - in
fact the "professionals" tell you not to do it. And tell me not to, as well, even though I still do (except in places where the
tap water appears really terrible, like in parts of Africa where it came out of the tap looking like lager).
Maybe I should also say I'd never have *not* splashed the
Miraflow with saline and then poured the saline away, before
filling the lens up with saline to put it in, even if I found I
had to restrain myself from holding the Miraflow'd lens under
the rising main tap!

Gosh, Savina, what a list of symptoms! And how frustrating for
you having to cope with them all, day in and day out.
Some of them sound like KC - and, as others have said, some do
not. Or seem very extreme versions of KC symptoms.
I do hope you can get to find someone who can give you a proper
and full diagnosis. Maybe you have several things.....? I
wonder if it's possible that part of your problems are
neurological rather than strictly with the eye itself? - ie.
there's a "loose connection" somewhere along the route between
the eye, along the optic nerve, to the vision-processing parts
of the brain, so your poor brain is having to sort out a lot of
"noise" along with the "signal"? - like the vision equivalent of trying to understand someone on a very crackly phone line. But
I'm not an expert - I hope you find the right person who is. Do keep us posted.
