Lynn started off looking at squints:
Ah! That makes a lot of sense.
I remember measles as being something that can badly affect eyes - particularly in the developing world; don't ht eaid agencies say that measles jobs could save the sight of large numbers in developing countries?
It wouldn't surprise me at all there are no/very few/poor KC stats. It isn't a *communicable* disease, so the folks at the COmmunicable Disease Surveillance Centre (aka "Colindale") don't surveil it.
And I don't remember the stats I did see about measles and effect of jobs, so will reconsider "most people under 40".
(Memory like a seive these days; something to do with a neck injury at work a few years ago.)
Agree entirely about inaccuracy of figures, non/mis-diagnosed people.
Best of luck with the studies - keep us posted.
For the record - I had measles age 6, finished it with (infectious) conjunctivitis and eyelids gummed together. KC developed rather fast aged about 14. Never thought to connect the two before, but in those days, almost everyone had measles.
never had any idea what might have caused the KC to be triggered off.
I've thought a few times about the prospect of doing a study to see if I could identify any (possible) triggers for hydrops (having had 4 so far0. Not got that off the ground yet, but one of these days.....
One factor I have considered is this: I heard some theory about a possible "autoimmune" type trigger for KC (which might also relate to why people with KC also have such things as asthma, excema, hay fever......)
Well, in my family, one side has a lot of (ordinary) myopia and astigmatism; and the other side has autoimmune history. Put them together, and.......????
No idea why it should set off at 14 though.
