Sue, I can agree that night time driving can be hazardous at times. One night recently, when it was raining, I was heading home after a long day and was driving through country lanes. Although there was more than adequate room for two vehicles to pass, the bends and brows were a nightmare. On several occasions I had to slam on the breaks as I literally couldn't see where I was headed - I was lucky to stay on the road!
I constantly read number plates as I'm driving, as the light fades or visibility reduces I read more and more of them! I was told that the legal limit for driving is to read a regular numberplate at a distance of 20 metres. This I judge and test myself for as I leave the house in the morning, as I approach the car during the day, as I walk along the street, when I park in car parks and on every road as I'm driving all over East Anglia.
The new lights are confusing; my concern is that one day one of those new blue lights will actually be the police and they've pulled me over because my driving has been erratic. If they ask me to sign on the dotted line I hope they don't notice the squint and my close scrutiny of the form .......... will they notice that I cannot see where they want me to sign!?!
For me, the answer will have to be to stay away at night if I'm far from home and the weather's particularly bad. Rather that than risk injury to myself or other innocent road users.

In the time im still wearing my glasses and night driving is a problem. do contact lenses help with this? are there any hospitals in the midlands where i might be seen private as im really not happy driving for much longer at night.

Dave,
Depending on the state of your KC, then RGP lenses could well help in your nighttime driving. They've enabled me to drive for the last 3 years, when I wouldn't have been legal with glasses.
Rather than look for a private hospital, why not search for a decent optician that could help you. Get the yellow pages out and ring round the opticians in your area; start with the "smaller" ones - the two-branch optician I see have been excellent getting "Rose K" RGP lenses for my KC, years after Boots sent me to hospital... the consultant took one look at me and told me to find a better optician!
Best of luck

Hi Dave,
Where abouts in the Midlands do you live? I'm from Hereford and was diagnosed with KC in the summer, and I see a specialist in Hereford. If you live near there and want his name/number then email me (emmafletch@yahoo.co.uk).
