Hi Andi, hi all,

My right eye was treated with topo-PRK + CXL (the Athens Protocol) about one month ago. The pentacam images (before and 30 days after the treatment) show signicative normalization in terms of sagittal curvature:

The only inconvenient is the loss of some 80 microns of precious tissue…

Hi Epik,

you must be patient, this is much to early to valuate this.

You will see the real benefits after 6-8 months. I had the procedure too. But with Dr. Cummings in Dublin, he and Dr. K in Greece are the best in it I think.
Wish you luck!!

Time for another update. We tweaked the power of the semi-scleral lens and I got the replacement a few days ago. I also got a semi-scleral lens for the other eye.

With the lens adjusted, the improvement is now very significant. Vision in the treated eye is now as good or better than the untreated eye. General acuity and contrast is better, but the cone of focus is a bit narrower than the untreated eye so it balances out a little. Vision overall is markedly improved. I still wouldn't say I have good vision, but it is good enough that I would feel perfectly comfortable driving again. I don't have a car so I haven't actually driven yet but I won't hesitate if I'm asked to. I can read all kinds of signs from fairly far and I can focus quite quickly. With proper lighting, I can read on my Kindle at arm's length with the smallest font size. Basically I see well enough to feel comfortable doing pretty much any day to day task, indoors or outdoors.

The semi-scleral lenses are really, really comfortable and that alone has made my life a lot easier too.

At this point, after the procedure and with the semi-sclerals, I just feel like my vision is "a little bad", as opposed to feeling positively handicapped as I used to. This is all I could have asked for and I am really happy with this result. I'm still not taking anything for granted. It's only been four months (to the day) after the procedure so far so there's still a long way to go before I know if it will last, but no matter what I'm going to enjoy myself until then.

I wouldnt do it again wih 100% sure.
If you are thinking to do, think 10 times, wait for a new tecnology like laser
Internal lenses etc.
But definitly dont do kereflex.
I will write more about the procedure later with more details.
And also i need to say avedro doest want to know about you after the procedure. They know that the procedure didnt work in many cases but they are not worried about it.
I tnink they are trying to hidden the statistics.

I'm sad to hear that, I'm really interested in hearing about your experience as your early results sounded pretty promising.

Have you had topography guided PRK followed by cross linking done?

how did your procedure go, and what were your befoe and after results?

how long ago did you have it done?

Is it stable now, or changing like what most keraflex patients seem to be getting?

Hi drink, hi metallic, hi all,

I think that for the time being, topoPRK +CXL seems to be the most efficient option, provided that It can be done (minimum corneal thickness, position of the thicker area relative to the center or the vision area, etc.).

Personally, I had a very normal period after surgery, with no pain, irritation, or photophobia.

50 days after surgery, I feel well; my vision has recovered at the it was before. There is a slow but constant improvement that is expected to last for the next 3-4 months. At that time, it is expected that I shall have no need of spectacles, with a vision 9/10 (4/10 without glasses, before). This remains to be proven…

The pentacam views show a clear normalization of the cornea (vision area) 30 days after the treatment and Dr Kanellopoulos is satisfied from this results.

Generally speaking, I think that the use of the PTK method for the epithelium removal, and the use of the new avedro technique of rapid CXL (10 mw/cm2 for 10 min) have minimized the failures of the so called “Athens Protocol”.

However, there is always a risk of complication, as shown in the video below:

epik

Fantastic information and thank you very much for the link.
Please do keep up updated to how you are and how you feel as time goes by.

That youtube link was a good watch.

I have had Keratoconus sfor around 10years now, and i really do feel like the progression has really slowed down. before i use to have my lenses changed for comfort every few months, 6 months at least max a set of lens would last me. The condition would progress leading to changing lenses regularly. Now over the years, i can wear the same lens for almost a year, until it needs tweaking slightly. so really do feel like progression has slowed down, and ideal time to have some sort of treatment done.

Topo guided prk followed by c3r does seem something like il consider, and have a consultation to see if my eyes are suitable for the procedure.

'Epik' and others, please do keep us updated to how the treatment is doing its job, and how your feeling.

Sorry to hear that Luciano. As read earlier, you got good and promising results in the begining, so I am really looking forward to know what happened.

I heard about keraflex procedure almost one year ago, but because of lack of data and experience with it I waited. As I found in this forum it produced both good and bad results in a short period (up to 3-4) months. Would be good to know how are you now.
