new to sclerals
I am a new wearer of scleral lenses and have found them easier to look after than RGP's due to the fact that i have lost so many of them. Comfort is a bit strange at first but i have zero tolerance of RGP lenses so this is my last stand. It's a case of grin and bear it for now or its hello to the eye surgeon. The only problem i have is with saline. I find this makes my eyes sting after about half an hour. Any body know of any other brands suitable for supa sensitive eyes like me?

spooky sclerals
Do anyone else find sclerals are great for spooking non-contact lens wearers? They get a bit freaked when they see the size of them. I've had hours of fun already.

Hi Helen,
You'll probably find that you're sensitive to the preservatives in the saline rather than the saline itself. You're probably therefore best filling the lens with a phial-based product rather than a lidded one. I use both Celluvisc and Amidose to fill my lenses. Celluvisc somes in tiny phials, just enough for one for each lens insertion. Amidose is in larger resealable tubes. Neither contain preservatives.

Hi Kirsty, Just wondered how you are getting on with your lenses? Another thought as the rgps are rubbing your corneas - how about piggy-backing, i.e., wearing a soft lens underneath the rgp corneal. Have you tried this yet? Might be worth a go as you seem to be having trouble with sclerals. Let us know how things are. SUE

Hello
No you are not abnormal. Like you, I wore RGP corneal lenses for many years before I was given a scleral for my left eye at about the same time as I had a graft in my right eye.
I have never been able to wear my scleral for more than an hour or two a day, and now wear it only occasionally.
Meantime, my graft eye has been getting better and tomorrow I'll find out if the sight has stabilized enough for a contact lens to be prescribed. (I hope so because then they will put me on the list for a graft in my left eye).
To carry me over the interim, the hospital has ordered a Kerasoft lens for my left eye. Unfortunately the original one was too tight, so I'm waiting for a second try.
If you cannot wear your scleral, keep going back to explain the difficulty you are having. Keep in touch and let us know how things are working out.
