HI,
I have been piggybacking in my left eye for nearly two years now, following and intacs op. It was felt that my cornea was quite fragile, and that the extra protection from the soft lens, could prevent any irritation from the RGP lens, which I had a lot off before the op.
I haven't looked back since (excuse the pun), not a single days irritation since then, no dust under the lens or anything, so I'm a real advocate of this now, particularly from the user perspective. There doesn't seeme to any downside with regards oxygen flow to the eye, so hopefully, will be continuing like this for some years to come.
The soft lenses are provided free of charge, so its no more expensive than only having RGP's.
Regards

Peter

Moorfields DO indeed give daily disposables for piggybacking - at least, they did to me, for PB under sclerals (sic!)
ANd being unpowered, they do not have a charge for them.
Theoretically..... I had quite a hoohah about this a few years ago, when no-one knew whether I was supposed to be charged or not, and so couldn't get me any! - ended up with 2 letters from the boos of MEH trust to my MP (!!) and a refund for the set I'd paid for and shouldn't have had to.
I think there are also people who've had (clean and keep" soft lenses for PB from Moorfields too, so it can depend.
Mine too were the "drapiest" available - but they still didn't go in and stay in my eye on their own, the cones were too steep. I had to put them inside the scleral, "glue" the 2 together with a glob of Celluvisc, and put them noth in together.
Then I had a graft in that eye...... AM now trying the soft PB lenses under the scleral in the other eye - seem to be improving wear time but spend the first hour or so blicking out all the Celluviscy goo.
I di dhave a batch of Accuvue, the current lot are BBiomedics 1 day (pcufilcon B) with UV blocker, from COoperVision.
sorry, ocufilcon - keyboard going funny.
Incidentally, if you do ever have to pay, and if Acuvue will fit, I discovered that they were cheaper for 3 months than the NHS lens charge in my local ASDA!! - but you need to get the hospital to give you the prescription to take to ASDA with you.... if you can persuade MEH to give you a prescription....
As for the person trying to wean you off PBs - sounds like a case of, you saw the wrong person there! Try to get to talk to someone else.
Next appointmnet in December sounds like the eye hositals we all know and love too.
Cynic? Moi??
INcidentally, when the eye hospital put my neck out and I was in agony all over the weekend, I rang the chiropractor's office first thing MOnday and they fitted me inthat morning.
Serivce with a smile. Literally. And expressions of worried concern, of course.
THe difference? - the eye hospital is part of the NHS and the chiropractor has to get me to pay his bills.
Good luck with the PB.
Rosemary
