piggy back lenses

We have for a long time been storing our rigid trial lenses in Opti Free solution without any problems.The reason we do so is because RGP solutions,as you know, are more viscous and tend to dry up and get messy unless the solution is replaced very frequently.Opti Free labelling can not say it's suitable for RGPs due to licensing requirements.If you are concerned and,for my protection so that you don't sue me if you get an adverse reaction (!) you could use Quattro which is licensed for use for both soft and rigid,but you may have problems finding an optician/chemist that stocks it.

just reading the last few posts regarding piggyback lens's,ive just started using this system and have found it to be much more comfortable then just wearing my rgp..with ragards to the solutions i clean the soft lens with the recomended solution and like wise with the rgp but always rinse the rgp with a few drops of the soft lens solution just before i put them in my eyes.seems to work for me..

with regards to just wearing soft lens's what type of lens's are out there as my nhs practioner dosent want to kw when i mention just soft lens's which is why im going to a high street optician this week for more answers i hope!!

Hello all

I used Quattro for a while and found it very difficult to get hold of where I live.

I was however very kindly put in touch direct to the suppliers of Quattro by Innovative Sclerals and for a time bought the solutions direct from Abatron (the makers of Quattro and Amiclair etc)

If anyone wants the details I can dig them out if you let me know.

I know of 3 manufacturers who currently market soft lenses for keratoconus.I have my own preference but would not be appropriate to mention brand names on this forum as it can be construed as promoting a particular product.Your practitioner can research the market and I am sure it would not be difficult to find the information using internet search engines.They obviously dont work for everyone which also applies to gas perms and sclerals, but it would be worth investigating if you're not coping well with your current lenses.Unfortunately the problem is that a lot of practitioners don't believe soft lenses could work as conventional wisdom dictates that they shouldn't, hence they are reluctant to try them.There is also a learning curve like with most things, and they may try a soft lens once and dont get a good result and dismiss the whole thing and stick to what they are familiar with. If you dont get any joy with your practitioner you could do your own research, and perhaps contact the manufacturers direct to see if they have any customers in your area.

Just like to put in a word here...

I agree here with Ali and should mention that in my post earlier - I mentioned the lenses that I personally fit. There are other soft lenses that work equally well... I know Ali fits a different manufacturor's soft lens with excellent results.

I was just carried away with the fact that many people seem to think that soft lenses cannot help in KC when they can. The soft lenses that are specialised for KC can give you good vision without the piggyback rgp.

And yes Sue, I have successfully fitted advanced cone with soft lenses - sometimes you can't quite get the crispness of vision with a soft on an advanced cone - but often you CAN get the wearing time up to all day wear which is a huge improvement when you have difficulties with rigid lenses.

So yes... there are various soft lenses available and if you want to try them, you need to ask if they are available in your area.

if only my optician was as patient and understanding as you guys are, then i might get some results!!!my nhs optician seems to have her head firmly in the sand and dosents want listen when i mention soft lens's!!!i hope i get some results on friday when i visit my high street optician

Hi Rob,

I have worn piggy backs for about 5 years now. I changed over to them as I could no longer tolerate my RGPs by themselves. I found them to be great and they gave me increased wearing time. I still wear them from time to time along with sclerals and I swop and change between the two. I would certainly give piggy back a try. Good Luck. Jan
