End of Day 3

Had the lenses in for over 14 hours with absolutly no problems at all :D

Day 4

By the time I take the lenses out, they won't have been in as lons as they were on Day 3 because for the first time in I do not know how long I had a lie in. It is Christmas after all.

Viosn in both eyes is stable and not fluctuating through the day with vision at the start of the day and after 12 hours being 6/6 and part of 6/4.5.

The plam tomorrow to see if the left eye has settled is to revert back to the K3 lens I had in October that gave 6/6 vision. This is to help determine if the IC lens just needs a tweak or if my left eye is still settling down. This is because the RGP l;ens in the left eye was different to the left RGP lens I had when we did the original refraction for the IC lens. The older RGP ;ens was a lot tighter fitting and put more load on the cornea, prior to that I had a looser RGP lens before we sorted the K3 lens for the left eye. So the left eye has had to put up with a lot over the past six months.

Thanks Gareth

Saves a lot of time for when I see you next, this does!

Hehe Rosemary ..... maybe we need the lenses mounted in little transparent dishes with screw top lids and put against a lightbox, though really one soft lens looks much like another when its suspended in fluid!!

Day 5

At the moment I have a K3 lens in each eye for the past 12.5 hours with absolutly no problems of discomfort.

Right eye started and still is 6/6 with some of the line below but is now an easy 6/6.

Left eye started 6/6 but is now at 6/9.

Binocular I an easy 6/6 with some of the line below. The binocular vision is matching my RGP lenses. With RGP's I usualy end up at about 6/9 in the right eye and the left staying at 6/6 with a binocular of 6/4.5 so already I would say the K3's overall are matching the RGP's for visual aquity. The nightime quality of vision seeing lights and so on is just the same as my RGP's.

The K3's surpass the RGP's in lens comfort. RGP's are realy uncomfortable after 8 hours and the righth lens especially feels like it moves and pinches the eye lid plus my eyes usually feel very dry and itchy by the end of the day. I have been doing the housework and when it comes to cobwebs, I have to take RGP's out because any dust generated feels like a stone under the lens. Nothing like that, when you do get something in your eye it is no worse than when it happens with no lenses, a few blinks and its gone unlike RGP's where dust gets lodged beneath the lens. I feel so much more independent, a small mirror and a single bottle of solution which no longer leaves my pockets bulging. Now it is as if I am no different to anyone with daily disposables for vanity reasons.

With the RGP's you always have in the back of your mind that the lenses would easily blink out. The RGP's have such a large diameter that is very unlikely to happen, still need the sunglasses bore for light sensitivity rather than keeping the dust in the eyes to a minimum.

Usually over the Christmas holidays like many of you I have to plan when I wear lenses, what do I want to see, what is Ok to be just a blur and so on. Tomorrow I will throw caution to the wind and wear my lenses all day as I have done the whole week just like anyone who wears daily disposables.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed, I know the signs of over wear but the only way I will know the limits is when I over step the marque.

Having a pair of soft lenses that out perform my RGP's is a most satisfying Christmas present.

Thanks Lynn for all your perserverance over the past 18 months, I'll do my best to return the favour and help with the IC development.

Merry Christmas Everyone
Gareth

My pleasure Gareth!

Sounds like the KIC needs an Rx tweak ... as we got better VA than that on trials.

Merry Christmas to you too!

Gareth-Fantastic diary-love the pictures. Is that a real working engine? So clean-I guess there are no problems with CL hygiene then?Interesting to see how the VA can vary from day to day if measured. In practice we probably dont have the time to take daily measurements of VA.
Do you have a Snellen chart at home or do you use one of the online versions of VA assesment?
Lynn-When I was younger I used to hate it when patients kept a diary of how all the various lenses performed. Now I suggest they do such a thing!Do you find such things a helpful clinical tool?
Rosemary-Do you know that there IS a CL Museum? Its run by a friend of mine and he will happily accept any items of genuine interest.
Merry Christmas to ALL.

Hi Graeme...

Yes it is a working engine! Gareth is rightly very proud of it!

Yes,I know what you mean about diaries but actually they work really well because they give you a good picture of how long things take to truly settle coming out of an RGP for example, which is so helpful in explaining to patients what to expect. Also, when he mentions his vision starts to go off, its an indication that the graft is getting a little stressed and Gareth knows almost knows to the minute when to take his lenses out.

Over the years I have found listening to patients tells you reams about how to fit lenses. We don't always have time to do it in practice which is why these boards are a terrific resource.

How's the weather up there in Scotland this Christmas?

Hi Graeme!
No, I didn't know there was a lens museum. I'm fascinated.
Where is it, and when is it open for people tog o and visit? - or is it "by appointment only"?
Actually, maybe this should be another thread inthe "announcements" - and/or a news item inthe next newsletter. I'm sure there'd be several people here interested - and many potential donors!

The weather in this part of Scotland has been perfect: mild and calm with a slight mist hanging over the hills across the river giving a faintly mysterious appearance to the familiar scene.

I've been following Gareth's diary with fascination. I can see how it will be a help to you, Lynn.

As Christmas continues, every good wish to everybody here.

Lynn
Patient diaries are very useful especially in complex fittings or patients are trying different lenses or powers.Gives me another of my silly ideas.I might email you with my ideas once I put them togeather?
Weather as Andrew says is rather mild and very Un Christmas like.Mist is a little eerie over the Braes here in Paisley.
Rosemary
The Museum is run by the College of Optometrists who have taken over the British Optical Association collection.I think you need to arrange a time to visit though they do all they can to accomodate any visitors. web details

I will find out more and get back to you. I myself have never visited the Museyeum though I did send some old books down recently.
Continued good wishes for the festive period.
