My policy is always to do what I know will work: I do wear good quality sunglasses that polarize the light and I always wear a broad brimmed hat when out in the sun.
What do I look like? An absolute idiot. Do I care? Not a bit!
I wouldn't go out in strong sunlight without any protection on my eyes.
On a general note, it does run counter to my intuition to say that wearing glasses causes eye strain and headaches. I am aware that when I do not have any correction I 'peer' through screwed up eyes and that my eyes become tired and my headache returns. with my glasses on I have no such experience.

As long as you have the correct UV blocker in the lenses, then the dilating effect of a tint on the pupils doesn't matter. Also, as Andrew says, polarising lenses are very useful against glare. I would not advise sunning oneself with eyes closed as a way of getting used to light - you may well end up with burnt eyelids! The skin around eyes is very sensitive and can react badly to prolonged exposure to UV.
Again, back in the 20's no-one had even dreamt of the hole in the ozone layer or done the research on UV etc.
As to why they publish information that has been proven to be untrue - a lot of it is as Andrew says - publishers recycle old ideas to make money. Its someone's opinion and as far as that goes its as valid as the next person's. As they say, its a free country! What is important is that you do not automatically take as "truth" everything you see on the news or read in newspapers or read in books. Have a questioning mind and read around the subject if it interests you. There are always opposite points of view out there!
