The stuff on the stick was probably Flouroscene (just guessing that spelling). It glows under UV light so they can see your tear-flow - this helps determine the fit of the lens. Apparently it should gather in a "polo" shape under your lens if the fit is good, presumably because a lens should touch the cornea all around the edge and in the centre.

The dryness of your eyes can be affected by various factors, including your environment and your diet etc. In fact, I'm sure I remember reading somewhere on here a while ago about people associating Aspartame (a common artificial sweetener often used in "diet" soft-drinks, etc) leading to dry eyes. But don't quote me on that one.

P.S. Only just seen the photo you posted - yep that looks very similar to what I remember - except I'm used to seeing it in blurryvision(tm). Aren't macro-lenses great? I'm so short-sighted in my ungrafted eye these days that it's like having a macro-lens built in!
