Socrates sat by the road one day. As he pondered the nature of life, the universe and everything, there happened that way a certain family who were travelling from their old home in Antioch to their new home in Ephesus.
"Hail travellers", the philosopher greeted the family as they went past.
"Hail teacher," responded the father. "We are a poor family on our way from our old life in Antioch to a new life in Ephesus. I wonder, sir, whether you would be able to tell a poor man and his family what he might expect in that new town?"
"Tell me about the town you have left", replied the teacher.
"Antioch is a wonderful place. We were so sad to leave. The people are kind, the weather temperate and the home we left was comfortable and airy."
"You will find Ephesus just the same", said Socrates with a smile, and he waved as the family went on, encouraged by their encounter at the roadside.
A little while later, while Socrates was sitting by the road, another family happened that way. They also were making their way from Antioch to a new home in Ephesus.
"Antioch is a dreadful place," they replied. "The people are nosey and mean, the weather is too hot, the house we have left was small, cramped and stuffy. We were glad to leave."
"I am sad to say," the philosopher was looking disconsolate, "that you will find Ephesus the same."
As they went on, the second family carried the weight of their sorrow made heavier by the expectation that although everything in life was now changing, everything would be the same.
Is the grass greener? Probably not. but, it is probably just as green on the other side as it is where we are right now!
