Hi
I used to wear sceral lenses a few years back and experienced the same concerns as you. I was under the care of Ken Pullam at Moorfields and he proposed trying out the 'Mini Sceral'. This was someway between a corneal lens and full-size sceral in diameter. Although still not ideal, it made the world of difference to how I felt about the size of the lenses and also ease of insertion/removal and importantly, comfort!
Hope this helps!

Re: Long term scleral use
Hi Sach, thanks for the note, although I believe i currently am using mini-sclerals - although i never got a choice. Thankfully i'm able to get both lenses in first time now. I found with trial and error that using the full length of my index and middle finger (like a scissors gesture) to hold my lashes apart works best. It gives me good leverage across the full width of my lids to keep them open fully. When using just the point of my finger I couldn't open the eye fully and the lens was brushing against my lashes or edges of my lids which were drooping.
An update on my refitting, the second pair are much better although i'm still getting redness on the right edge of right eye and left edge of left eye. As this is symmetrical i'm a little worried that it might be down to the shape of my eyeball as opposed to the lens. To be honest i'm not fully convinced in the specialist fitting my lenses so not sure i can get this fixed. My other concern is that when i remove the lenses my vision is pretty bad. It takes about 2 days of not wearing them to go back to "normal". The specialist said that this was normal and due to having the lens sitting on my eye.
I should add that this second pair are still much much better than the first. I'm able to wear them 9 hours a day and they even correct my vision at night, so i no longer have to live like vampire unable to drive at night always needing to be home before sunset. I have one more refitting allowed under the warranty so i'm going to try and get that sorted and keep you all updated, third time lucky. Thanks again for all the support.

Re: Long term scleral use
Just a final update on this thread. It's been about 3 months and I'm using the lenses comfortably for 12 hours plus a day without any issues. Insertion is very easy now and can't remember the last time it took more than one attempt or had any bubbles. In case anyone is interested, this is the lens I am wearing: http://www.no7contactlenses.com/comfort15.html
Thanks again
Thanks again

So glad you've got there! And thank you for this update - it's really good to hear the end of the story on this forum. The difference between your first post on this thread and now is, I hope, really encouraging for others trying to get used to wearing a scleral lens. All the best!
