that initial magnification takes the brain time to adjust to, I saw pores in my skin once as huge holes!

Re: Ordered some RGP lenses
Hello, I've been reading this post with interest as I'm having some RGP lens issues myself (wasn't sure whether to start a new thread or not, so just replied to this one).
Firstly, how are you getting on with your RGP lenses?
I've had mine from Moorfields for about 3 weeks and while they do improve my vision for the first two hours or so, once I get to the three hour mark they just become really uncomfortable and my eyes water a lot and then the vision is just really blurry and I'm desperate to get them out. I know that I'm supposed to give them time and build up gradually but it's so disheartening (especially when I put my glasses back on after and my vision is all over the place until it settles back down!)
Also, does anyone know if they're meant to correct the halo-ing/ghosting effect? As while they do greatly improve my vision, I do still get ghosting when I look at black and white text and halo-ing when I look at streetlights etc in the dark. Would love to know how other people have gotten on and if you've experienced anything similar. I'm 34 and a little bit worried that if it gets much worse then my job might become a little tricky to do...

Re: Ordered some RGP lenses
Hi Harry,
It's good to know that the lenses are improving your vision. However your lenses shouldn't be so uncomfortable that you are desperate to take them out after only three hours.
Compared to your glasses you should have a lot less ghosting. Sometimes some residual ghosting remains which is not that noticeable in normal life. It really depends on how strong the ghosting is. I know that I've had lenses where I although I've read the 6/6 line easily but, because of the ghosting, I've not felt that I'd got 6/6 vision in real life as the ghosting was effectively blurring things. A different design solved the problem for me.
As you've only had your lenses for a few weeks I would expect that you will have another appointment in a month or so to see how things are going. It is quite likely that all that is needed is a slight change to the lens.
Do let us know how you get on.

Re: Ordered some RGP lenses
Hi Lia, thank you for the quick reply! Yes, I'm back in May for a follow-up at Moorfields so I'll persist with them until then and see what happens. When you say that a different lens design solved your problem, was that all through the NHS or did you go private for any treatment?

Re: Ordered some RGP lenses
Hi Harry,
My current lenses are through the NHS. I did get my original contact lenses privately but changed to the NHS nearly 20 years ago when the optician I was seeing was unable to prescribe comfortable lenses for me.
Be careful how you persist with your current lenses. You need to remove them before they become uncomfortable. In my experience wearing my lenses for too long one day means that I have less wear time the following day. So do try to build up wear time gradually. If you are still only getting a couple hours of comfortable wear then obviously something is wrong. If you can, do wear your lenses to your next appointment so that they can see what is causing the problem.
Try not to worry, keratoconus contact lens fitting can be extremely frustrating for the patient and a challenge for the optometrist. But as one optometrist said at a KC Group meeting 'We like our challenges'.

Thank you Lia! I'll take that on board and persist until my next appointment
