Corneal Graft and piggyback contacts

Postby TomTam1 » Sun 30 May 2021 8:02 am

I had a graft in one eye back in 2012 and wear a semi sclera lens, but I’m finding it increasingly uncomfortable. I’m about to try a switch to a piggy back set up as I have this in my non operated eye and it’s worked really well.
Question is, has anyone else had a graft and successfully used a piggy back lens and how did you find it?

Hi,

We're not opthalmists or doctors, so we can only comment from personal experience. However some of use piggybacks, perhaps more often with smaller RGP lenses. If things are not so comfortable for you, you really need to get your option to find out why, especially after a graft and one that's been good until now.

Is it any better if you reduce your wearing time or take s couple of breaks during the day?

There is s known issue with piggybacking as for some it can cause vascularisation of the cornea whether you have had a graft or not. It is caused by reduced amounts of oxygen getting to the cornea behind two lenses. Not always a problem but it does need to be monitored.

The other option to consider is a full scleral which a generally very comfortable and for a grafted eye vaults right over the graft edge.

It would be great if you keep us updated how things progress.

Graham

Cheers... I guess I’m really hoping there are folk out there was are reading this with a nice comfy piggyback lens on a grafted eye, who hardly notice the lens and have vision like an eagle. :)
