hello

i am 38 years old and only last week was diagnosed as having mild keratocnus i got referred by my opticians in march from having astgimatism

I was told by senior eye surgeon/consultant i have mild keratocnus and have unaided vision of 6/6 and 6/9 plus 3. The eye consultant said i like to see you again then gave me appointment for a years time and said i dont think it will change and most prob be discharged. im using no glasses or contacts

what any your view on this?

Welcome to the forum.

Keratoconus varies a great deal from person to person and it sounds like yours is very mild and you are lucky that it was spotted by an optician as mild keratoconus can easily be missed.

Typically it is first diagnosed in teenagers or young adults and tends to stabilise as one gets older. There are however exceptions - which is why you are probably being called back in a year's time - just to make sure it hasn't progressed.

The other thing is that as we get older, the cornea starts to stiffen which is why for many of us the otherside of 40 often finds the condition is much more stable than it once was.

Can't remember the last time my unadied vision was as good as yours. I think once you have seen a consultant and a diagnoses made you are in the system and best to stay that way as it then becomes a lot easier to see someone at a later date. Once you get discharged out of the system, it can take many months to be seen and then you have to go through all the preliminary investigations again just to get to the point you were discharged.

Your age is definitely on your side there, as others have said, progression is much more unlikely with anyone around the age of 40 or older. My keratoconus is officially 'moderate' and I can see okay with glasses (currently going through contact lens fittings) and my prescription hasn't changed that much in the last 12 months, although it will need changing again soon.

Just... keep an eye on it

i have just recieved a letter today and thought i update.

My pentacam scans and optometry assessment are consistent with keratoconus. Fortunately he is now 38 and his keratoconus is unlikley to progress. His unaided vision is very good at 6/6 and 6/9 plus 3 which means he can see without the need for glasses or contacts This level of vision meets dvla requirments in a full vision field. i will arrange see him in 12 months.

so looks a promising letter and i should be ok

Sit back, carry on as normal before you found you had KC and see what the consultant says in 12 months.

I've not seen mine in over 10 years now, just go to the contact lens clinic and they say if anything has changed, it does sometimes but the in my prescription now is age related and the fact the lens inside my eye is less flexible so requires help by boosting the power in my contacts.

On the whole I take no progression or overall change in the cornea to be the best I can hope for.

how to KC sufferers get on with pc screens. is there any do's or don'ts regarding them?.

find the bright sites to be more hassle. I finding sunglasses help bit with out doors and indoors absolutely ok.

but I don't need glasses or contacts can see ok unaided. I tryed a plus +1.00 everything was a blur

I'm 39 now with KC for couple months. What's the chance of the disease getting worse or is it unlikely and stay stable being im a older now.

In most cases progression stops around 40. You should make sure you get a CT scan ASAP though, and again in 6 months which will confirm either way.
